As you probably know, in 1963 General Motors gave the original seven Mercury Astronauts fuel injected Corvette Stingray Convertibles.  After Gus Grissom traded his in, I ended up with it in 1965 while a junior in high school.

I traded in my old '53 vette and made the $91 a month payments by bagging groceries after school at Publix.  In those days everyone with an elbow didn't own a corvette.  This photo was taken by a photographer for the Cocoa High School newspaper during 3rd period.  I smoked the tires good, but he had never seen anything like it before and snapped the camera too early to capture the great burnout.
