Thrilling Night of Thrills at Anderson Speedway

ANDERSON, Ind. (April 26, 2008) – Always billed as on the of the most entertaining events of the season at Anderson Speedway, the Night of Thrills presented by The Herald Bulletin, didn’t disappoint the thousands of fans that turned out on Saturday, April 26. The feature events included School Bus Figure 8’s, Trailer Race, Cork Screw Race, Newco Metals Legends and the Roll Over Contest.

The women took to the track first in the Powder Puff Front Wheel Drive feature, with Rhonda Carr running away with the win. Carr ran up front all night, with Carrie Gibson running a distant second. Dixie Rumler ran third, and Janeen Dulworth coming in fourth.

Robin Cullen won a thrilling Powder Puff School Bus Figure 8’s feature. On the fifth lap, an exciting incident took place when then leader Roxanne Grissom got caught up with the end of the field in the crossover and collected Kendra Burgess. The crash ended along the front stretch wall and it left the fans in awe. Both drivers walked away from their buses.

The Cork Screw race saw some paint traded as Ronnie Phipps took the victory. Phipps gained the lead on lap two, and then outlasted all the other contestants to take the checkered flag. Nick Warner came in second, Mark Dulworth third, Josh Walker wound up fourth and early leader, Nathan Burgess rounded out the top five.

The Herald Bulletin Paper Drop was the next event on the agenda and crowd favorite Dave Looper won first place. Looper drove a street version of the car Dale Earnhardt raced in IROC in the late 90’s. Josh Walker had the second quickest time. Josh Ebbert was third, Bryce Hall fourth and Brent Wollard came home fifth.

Cottontown, TN’s David Moyes III won his second Newco Metals Legends race of the year. Moyes took the lead on lap two and only had to deal with one yellow flag on his to a second straight Legends victory. Clark Dietzen and Cullen Comasta brought out that caution with they got together in turn three. Alex Arelano, Moyes’ closest competitor, ran second. Craig Haack, running in Moyes’ back-up car, came home third, John Robbins fourth and Sloan Henderson fifth.

The men’s turn in the school buses saw even more action as Danny Stanley recorded the win in the School Bus Figure 8’s. On the ninth circuit, incredible action took place as the bus driven Shane Cullen flipped completely over and shortly after then leader Coery Elliot flipped on his side after an incident in the crossover. Mike Day finished in second spot with Jake Owens crossing the line in third position. Sam Folsom and Roy Grissom, Sr. completed the top-five finishers.

The Trailer Race saw sparks fly and stuffed animals revived as Mike Warrell finished in first. On the opening lap, one trailer fell completely off it’s frame and spilled some stuffed animals. Nathan “Moose” Burgess came in second, Casey Smith third, Kevin Rabenstine was fourth and Eric Blair rounded out the top five.

The last event of the evening was the fan favorite Roll Over Contest, which Brandon Henry of Muncie finished tied with his teammate Moose Burgess, but since he went before Moose he was declared the winner. Henry flipped over once and added a quarter turn more to end on his side for 6 points on his first run, the most for one run in the contest. Kris Farley, “Bozo the Clown”, came hone third, Mathew Jones was fourth and Donnie Ellis, Jr. took fifth.

Anderson Speedway returns to action next Saturday night as the Ed Martin Chevrolet SuperTrucks, ImmediaDent Figure 8’s, Newco Metals Legends return to action along with the first season appearance of Thunder Roasters.
