Hialeah Speedway to Operate in 2004 | by Marty Little
HIALEAH, Fla. - Despite rampant rumors to the contrary, Hialeah Speedway will be in operation during the 2004 season it was announced by current promoter Chuck Wilson.
While it is no secret that that 33 acre parcel on which the speedway is located will be developed in the near futrue, the time frame has been pushed back for an indefinite period which will allow the track to open for its 50th season of weekly stock car action.
At this point it is not known how long the track will be able to stay open but local racers and fans alike are thrilled that they will still have a place to enjoy racing even if it is only for a few months.
The historic Miami-area oval opened in July 1954 as a club run operation under the Greater Miami Racing Association banner and remained in GMRA control until 1995 when money woes saw other groups and individuals assume control of the nearly flat third-mile oval.
In recent years dwindling attendance and car counts have kept the future of the track in doubt but like a cat with nine lives the only remaining short track in south Florida appears to have cheated the bulldozers yet again, at least for now.
