| ENTRIES STREAM IN FOR 2002 WINTERNATIONALS AT ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD | Entries continue to be received as the 2002 Florida Winternationals are less than a month away at Orlando SpeedWorld.
Over forty midget entries are expected for the five nights of racing, February 19-23, sanctioned by NAMARS and it will be the first time midgets have competed in Florida in several years. The series is being run as a memorial to the late Kenny Irwin, Jr.
USAC National Midget Champion and 2001 National Midget Driver of the Year Tracy Hines of Greenfield, IN is already entered and will be driving the Wilke/Pak Motorsports Sesco powered car.
Former Tampa, FL resident Dave Steele, who now calls Indianapolis home, is also entered driving a mopar machine owned by Dino Tomassi. Steele has experience at the 3/8 mile Orlando Speedplant and will easily be one of the favorites.
Making the long tow from Edmonds, WA will be NSRS/USAC competitor Rory Price who will be at the wheel of a new pavement car just purchased by Price/Westlake Motorsports.
Entry has also be confirmed for young standout Bobby East, who will of course be wheeling one of his dad's Beast machines. East will be among a list of young up and coming hotshoes that will challenge crafty veterans like Gene Lee Gibson of Richwood, OH and the ageless Mel Kenyon of Lebanon, IN>
Several of the drivers who finished in the top ten in NAMARS Championship Midget Car Series points in 2001 have already entered including Teddy Beach, Aaron Pierce, Ron Gregory, Matt Westfall, Sondi Eden, and Davey Ray.
Eden, the young lady who turned in some great performances in 2001 is sure to be an entry in the "ladies only" midget race, now scheduled for Wednesday, February 20. Ocala, FL driver Wendy Mathis, who just completed her rookie year with the Florida-based TBARA sprint car group after several years in the TQ midget ranks, has apparently found a ride for the race which will be run in addition to the regular midget feature that night.
Along with the midgets, Dwarf cars, Legends, Mini- Stocks, and Super Stocks will be featured all five nights while the Classic Auto Racing Series will be showcased the final three nights of the Winternationals.
Among the Mini-Stock entries already filed is 2001 SpeedWorld Champion Tim "Missileman" McPhail of Pinellas Park. He'll be tested by a host of challengers including teenagers Bobby Orr and Trisha Gray, who both plan to run for the 2002 SpeedWorld regular-season championship.
An impressive field of Classic Auto Racing Series cars is also expected headed by 2001 Champion Eddie Thornton of Orlando and Maryville, TN driver Larry Gibson, who has won the last two races he's run in at SpeedWorld.
Advance tickets for the five nights of racing are available at $50 for adults and $30 for teens. Children 12 years of age and under will be admitted free to the grandstands all five nights. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling NAMARS at (317) 248-1240 or by logging on to www.namars.com. Have an opinion on this story?
