December 14, 2008 Willy Jude Takes First Top Gun Sprint Race By Curtis Whalin The Top Gun dirt car series held it’s first race at Voulsia Speedway Park on Saturday, December 13, 2008. Nineteen cars were at the track for the winged sprint dirt car race which meant three heat races, After the 00 driven by Marvin Shirley and the 38 car of Mark Ruel both opted to go to the rear at the start of the first heat race, pole position fell to Mark Ruel Jr in the 83R with Tim George in the number 1 car alongside. It was Mark Ruel Jr. who made the better start and took the race lead. On lap 5, Mark Ruel was struggling with his 38 car and the car failed to turn coming of turn 4 and he hit the outside wall hard, bringing out the red flag.

It was a huge weekend with near-perfect weather to wrap up the 2008 season at Orlando Speedworld as Desoto Speedway regular Steven Darvalics took home the win in the Third Annual Charity Truckers 200 presented by Fountain Motorsports Driver Development and Biscayne Roofing. But the big winner was young Lacey Pate and her family as well over $14,000 was raised for them with donations still coming in that will add to that incredible amount.

The Checkered Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) was at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday December 6 for their final race of the 2008 season. Going into the race weekend, only 19 points separated the first and third place drivers in the race for the Championship. Sixteen cars signed in for the event. There were eight cars in the first heat. The current point leader and the car sitting in third place in the points, Keith Butler in the number 19 car and Gary Gimmler in the number 29 car started side by side in 5th and 6th position.

By Jason Loughren Fans and drivers outlasted a weather delay for another great night of racing at the Clay by the Bay. Around 100 cars signed in as the racing season worked its way to next weekend’s grand finale. Due to the weather delay heat races were only run in the Late Model class. In the South Shore Auto Sales Late Models only 21 points separated front-runner KD Kelley and 2nd place driver Travis Varnadore at the start of the evening. Kelly and Varnadore started side by side on the 4th row in the final 25-lap feature race of the 2008 season.

The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series (UDLMCS) has purchased Hendry County Speedway from current operator Chris Ponsoldt. The track will be renamed Hendry County Motorsports Park and a new web site is being put together at www.hendrycountyracing.com.

David Wilson's name has become synonymous with winning in the state of Florida over the last couple of years. Now he will have his chance to make a name for himself outside his home state. Wilson signed a 40 race deal to race Friday nights at Tri-County Speedway and Saturday nights at Hickory Motor Speedway for the entire 2009 season. Brand new cars are currently being prepared for David, and LFRD is putting forth tremendous effort to make sure David and his team have a solid chance to win every time the car hits the track.

Samsula, FL (November 23, 2008) The 43rd Annual running of the Governor's Cup 200 is now down in the books along with the Third Leg of the Triple Crown and the 2008 Championship for the Noritz/Tempaco Sunbelt Super Late Models. Friday night at New Smyrna Speedway there were 28 Super Late models in the pits for practice. Two had problems and did not return on Saturday - Justin Larson, who lost a motor, and Michael Williams, who lost a rear-end. There were also a few surprise drivers who were warmly welcomed - Shane Sawyer who moved to Georgia and Dennis Schoenfeld from Concord, NC.

Ocala Speedway wrapped up the 2008 racing season with a huge night of racing, witnessed by a enthusiastic crowd of hearty race fans. The cold weather was tempered by the hot action on the track as five divisions raced for the final time this year, and as the closest points battle of all of the divisions was finally settled. And after the dust settled, the late model division championship for 2008 was decided by a mere four points.

With just 100 points separating first place Johnny Collins and second place Mark Whitener every step of the nights racing from qualifying all the way to the feature would be critical. The Checkered Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) returned to Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday September 20. A car count of 18 set them up for 3 heat races and a 30 lap feature. Each heat race had six cars in it. Third place was apparently the best place to start the heat race, as each of the heats was won by the car that started in third position. Scott Adema in the 22 took the first heat, David Slawiak in the 79 car claimed the second heat and Bryan Riddle in the 11X took the third.

KARNAC Media Two drivers sustained injuries requiring transport to hospitals over the weekend. The worst incident involved race car driver Mike Corcoran of Holly Hill, Fl. He was seriously injured Saturday night while racing in the 4 Cylinder Pure Stocks at Volusia Speedway Park. He wrecked as the race concluded the final lap of the feature, his car rolling several times, according to eyewitnesses. The car sustained major structural damage. The driver driver was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Fans crowded into Volusia Speedway Park in anticipation of a night full of action pack racing. They were not denied as the Late Models, Mini Stock, Sportsmen, Street Stock, Modified and 4 cylinders took to the field. It was a $3000 to win for the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models. The Mini Stock field had an additional $100 added to the 2 & 4 place winner from Florida Dirt Racing/Florida Dirt Bowl. Johnny "Locomotive" Collins took the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Model feature along with the $3000 purse. It was a high speed line dance as the field of 26 late models took the green flag. Brandon Cameron jumped to the lead but the next lap the lead was surrender to Darrell Padgett.

Racing is a funny thing. It is one of the few venues in life where an athlete can experience an incredible high only to have it snatched away seconds later. Justin Larson experienced this first hand at Bristol Motor Speedway. A regular competitor in the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division, Larson opted for a different ride at Bristol. Rather than the familiar white and green Skinner Nurseries Chevrolet, the 88 team arrived at Bristol with the same black Ford Larson campaigned at Concord Motorsports Park. If practice speeds were any indication the decision paid off.

Some local Bartow natives will remember a young Gail O'Doski as the voice of Polk county AM radio station WBAR before he become it's general manager in the late sixties. But his closest friends remember a loving family man, who's real passion was in his music and his racing. Neither of which he would ever strayed to far from.

But that it would come in 13 minutes — a staggeringly quick time for a 50-lap feature — and that it would come without a single caution.

(7/19/2008)- When Tonya Moschell the General Manager of Volusia Speedway Park was quoted as saying “I think the most important thing for everyone to understand that this will be the biggest Late Model race on dirt in Florida this season.” She had no idea that it would actually be as huge as the turn out would be. Scott Thompson was one of the most popular drivers at Volusia and was the Late Model track champion in 2005 and was on his way to being the 2006 National Late Model Series Rookie of the Year when he tragically lost his life in a non-racing auto accident.

The Checkered Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) made a Friday appearance at Charlotte County Motor Sports Park to help celebrate July 4th with a 35 lap feature race. With a car count of 18, the crowd was treated to three heat races.

After one false start, Keith Butler in the 19 car came from third place at the start of the first race to take the lead on the first lap and keep it to take the win. The second and third heats were both won by their pole sitters - Bryan Riddle in the 11X and Scott Adema in the 22. The three heat race winners were all eligible for the Barfields Clean Sweep Award that has grown to $500 - all they have to do to win the money was too win

The Professor Owns the Marathon Run at Golden Isles

Brunswick, Ga. - A blistering afternoon Georgia Sun greeted the fifty-three teams of the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series as they rolled into the Golden Isles Speedway for race number seven of the 2008 season. The Golden Isles crew had the track all packed in and ready to go for the anticipated 6:30 hot lap session.

Mother Nature had other ideas though as a late afternoon thunderstorm crashed through the area dumping massive amounts of the wet stuff. The rain lasted several hours postponing the start of the racing action until just after 9pm.

The Late Late Show at Golden Isles Well Worth the Wait

Though the afternoon rains backed up the program at Golden Isles Speedway Saturday night, fans were entertained by fifty-three dirt late model team as well as 65 racers from the local classes. Action was postponed until after 9:00 PM, when the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series qualifying got underway.

Fast time was set by Jason Fitzgerald, driving the Bobby Labonte Racing #7F. Fitzgerald, no stranger to Golden Isles, took home a 4th place finish in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series earlier this year.

Mother Nature put a big scare in a one time only opportunity Saturday night but fortunately she recognized the importance of months of work to get Dale Earnhardt Jr.s National Guard #88 Sprint Cup car to the track. A big 50 lap Pure Stock race was also riding on the weather predictions that looked awful at 3 p.m. when the pit gates opened but the show did go on with 118 racers gambling on the weather conditions putting on a great show.

Unfortunately the fans optimism was not so positive and they missed a good race card featuring........

McLaughlin Wins Big in Open Wheels

With the threat of rain all around, and then an early down pour that flooded the infield, and the radar saying it does not look good, yet the drivers were still pulling in.

One by one the other tracks were rained out, and then the sun came out and the drivers were calling they wanted to race, so out came the pumps to pump out the water and the sun stayed out enough to dry things up.

The drivers came out and Charlotte County Motorsports Park was on for a full night of racing.

Port Charlotte, FL (June 15th 2008) - Saturday night brought the Super Late Models back to Charlotte County Motorsports Park for a 100 Lap feature event. Rain fell throughout the early afternoon, so qualifying had to be canceled and pills were drawn for starting positions. 14 cars were on hand for the event.

The 184 of Randy Anderson started on the pole, with the #19 of Kevin Macy starting 2nd. The #8 of Sean LeMaster started 3rd, and the #38 of C.J. Calabrese started 4th.

When the green flag dropped, the 184 of Anderson jumped out in front for the lead, followed by the #19 of Macy, and the #8 of LeMaster 3rd. Coming out of turn

Orlando, FL (June 13, 2008) Hot, humid, dark clouds and a few rain showers did not stop the Advance Auto Parts Pro Trucks from heading to Orlando SpeedWorld for fifty laps of hot truck action.

Ricky Moxley set fast time for the twenty one truck field but it was Keith Lilley on the pole as Moxley pulled the five pill, inverting the top five trucks. After an on-track autograph session, it was time to buckle in and go racing.

Lakeland - Veteran racer Brian Finney out of Merritt Island used a late race pass on youngster Matt Bowers of Mount Dora to win the first leg of the FASCAR Florida Triple Crown sponsored by All Pro U-Pull-It. The winner and second place finisher started side-by-side in the 11th row and paced each other through the field.

The field saw is first trouble on lap-2 as Jeremy Colangelo stuck his nose under Fain Skinner going into turn three. The bump turned Skinner into the outside wall and he became the ramp over which an unsuspecting Brad May would launch his unsponsored car into the air. One and a half rolls later, May exited his car aided by safety workers.

Sixteen Checkered Flag Sprint Cars ran 35 lightning fast laps with David Slawiak getting his third win of the season, holding off a hard charging Brian Gingras for the win.

In the 14 car Open Wheel Modified race, Wayne Jefferson appeared on target to win yet again in a racing season that has shown the veteran from Largo having one of his best years.

Not to be however, as Jefferson was sent to the rear after making contact with front runner Phil Morrison, sending Morrison around on the front straight just past the halfway point.

Larry Brazil Jr. inherited the lead on a lap 18 red flag and was never headed in the 30 TBARA Florida pavement sprint car series contest at Desoto Superspeedway on May 31. Brazil survived a late race charge by David Steele and was able to distance Steele by several car lengths at the checkers.

29 cars signed in to the pits to provide another full field of cars for the nights event. At the green for the main event, young Dakotah Stephens took advantage of his outside front row starting position to jump out to an early lead in the 30 lap contest.
