IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
October 11, 2009
Ferry, Matthews, Vogel and Williams Winners at DIRToberFAST at Volusia Speedway Park
Barberville, FL (October 10, 2009) A late afternoon downpour did not spoil the fun at Volusia Speedway Park as the third day of DIRToberFAST came to an end. Fans and drivers started pouring end when the rain left giving everyone a great night but humid.

Twenty nine Late Models came for the $2500 to win 40 lap feature. Time trials were run with Ivedent Lloyd, in the 07 of David Clegg, setting fast time with a 18.016. Second fastest was John Kellum with a 18.812 followed by Tyler Ivey with a 18.816. Fourth fastest was the 53 of John Rankin with a 18.971 and rounding out the top five was Shane Williams with a 19.197. Andy Schell and Jason Fitzgerald did not qualify. Schell hit the wall during hot laps and was unable to fix his machine. Fitzgerald did not pass pre-qualifying tech and was unable to make changes in time for qualifying. Fitzgerald decided to just pack up and go home for the night.

Late Model Heat races were won by Shane Williams, Shan Smith, Johnny Collins and Richard Ferry.

Twenty two Sportsman ran the thirty lap feature for $1500 to win. Ronnie Ponce had the pole but it took two restarts before a lap was down in the books. Ponce took the early lead over Danny Vogel, Jr., Garret Stewart, Alan Peacock, and Josh Byrd but on lap 1, Bobby Richardson brought out the yellow as he found himself against the turn 2 wall. Richardson took his ride into the pits for a quick pitstop and returned for the restart.

With Ponce on the inside, Vogel on the outside, it took two tries again for a good green. On the second try for a green, Steve Shead broke in turns 1 and 2 and the wrecker was sent out to get him. Vogel was now your new leader followed by Ponce, Stewart, Paul Shead, and Ken Hall, Jr.

Lap 7 saw the yellow once again for Colin Wright who had hit the turn 2 wall. Wright was fine but done for the night. Having problems also was Corey Holley who was also forced to take a quick pit stop along with Alan Peacock. Both returned to the field in the rear for the restart.

Vogel once again got the point followed by Ponce, Hall, Stewart and Byrd. But it was another short green as the caution comes out on lap 8 as Holley and Haas spun in turns 3 and 4. Haas is pushed into the pits and Holley is forced to go in on the hook. Vogel once again takes the point on the green followed by Ponce, Hall, Byrd, and Stewart. Shane Williams, who started in the rear of the field due to being a late entry, is coming up fast and has worked his way to seventh.

Ponce puts the heat on Vogel in turn 4 but Vogel quickly shuts the door. Williams has worked his way to sixth and puts pressure on Stewart and takes over fifth. Lap 13 sees David Showers, Sr. against the frontstretch wall. Shower is able to refire his machine and continues on as he goes to the rear for the restart.

Ponce gets the better restart and takes over the point again followed by Vogel, Byrd, Stewart and Williams. Ponce is quickly building a six car lead over Vogel while Vogel has a nine car lead over third place Byrd. Lap 20 sees Shaun Daugharty retire to the pits. The caution comes out on lap 21 for Showers and Kinley who have gotten together in turns 3 and 4. Vogel spins to avoid Showers and Kinely and finds himself next to the turn wall. Showers rejoins in the field in the rear while Kinley is done for the night and Vogel gets his spot back since he was not the one who brought out the caution.

It is now a single file restart with nine laps left. Ponce once again takes the point over Vogel, Byrd, Williams and Stewart. Lap 24 Williams challenges Byrd for third but Byrd closes the door. However lap 25 sees Williams make his move and this time it works as he takes over third. Lap 26 sees the yellow come out for debris on the track. Ponce once again takes the point on the green followed by Vogel, Williams, Stewart and Byrd. Lap 27 Williams takes a look on Vogel for second but Vogel says "no way" and shuts the door.

Lap 28 sees the caution once again for Aaron Barsness who has spun at the bottom of turn 2. Barsness takes his ride in with only two laps remaining, ending his night. Ponce once again takes the point on the restart but it is a quick green as the yellow comes out for Stewart and Williams who were fighting hard for position. Williams spins and must go to the rear for the restart as Byrd, after a great run, retires with an overheating machine.

It is now a green/white/checkered as Ponce leads the way over Vogel, Stewart, Stanton Mills, and Hall. As the crowd stands, Vogel is able to take over the lead on the last lap from Ponce and takes the checkered over Ronnie Ponce, Garret Stewart, Stanton Mills and Shane Williams. A wild and crazy race and a long one.

Due to how long it took to run the Sportsman race, almost an hour, it was decided that the rest of the features would be timed. Thirty minutes for thirty laps and forty minutes for forty laps.

Racin Jason Davis had the pole for the 30 lap $1500 to win Modified race but before a lap was down, the yellow came out for Jeff Bagent who ends up in the mud on the inside frontstretch wall. Bagent is able to get his machine out of the mud and a complete restart is in order. With Davis on the inside and Larry Burkins on the outside, Davis takes the point over P.J. Wiggins, Charlie Macnichol, who has his old ride back from last year after buying it back from Cody Blair, Jimmy Carter and Dale Murray.

Shane Burrows brings out the caution on lap 1 as he spun at the bottom of turn 1. Jeff Matthews is forced to spin to avoid Burrows but gets his spot back since the caution was called on Burrows. Burrrows goes to the rear for the restart. But, as the craziness of the night continues, Davis spins in turn 1 bringing the yellow back out and now must go to the rear for yet another restart. This time it is Macnichol on the inside and Wiggins on the outside as Wiggins takes the point. But the yellow is back out as Burrows spins in turns 3 and 4.

With Macnichol on the inside, Wiggins out the outside, it is a "no" start as Wiggins jumps the restart. One more time and Wiggins will go to the rear. On the second restart, this one is good as Wiggins leads the way over Macnichol, Jamie Carter, Matthews, and Jimmy Carter. Matthews is on fire by lap 6 and is now running in second and looking for the point.

Davis, who was sent to the rear earlier in the race, has worked his way to seventh by lap 11. Wiggins continues to lead the way over Matthews, Jamie Carter, Macnichol, and Jimmy Carter. Lap 13 sees Matthews take the point as he begins to build a ten car lead over Wiggins. Jamie Carter passes Wiggins for second as Wiggins settles into third followed by Jimmy Carter and Macnichol. Lap 21 sees Matthew Permann go very high off turn 4 but does a very nice job of catching the car and not spinning.

With five laps to go, Matthews has a 1/4 track lead over Jamie Carter. Burkins gives it a valiant try to pass Macnichol for fifth but Macnichol shuts the door retaining his position. Matthews takes the checkered for $1500 over Jamie Carter, P.J. Wiggins, Jimmy Carter, and Charlie Macnichol.

Nineteen Street Stocks were in the field for their 30 lap feature and $1000 to win. On the pole was Mike Tripp who took the point on the green over Billy Medders, Patrick Williams, Phil Brown, and Wally Schneider. But by lap 2, Medders has passed Tripp and taken over the point but we are not done yet as on lap 3, Brown has the point followed by Medders, Williams, Tripp, and Hughes.

Lap 5 sees Wally Schneider slow and takes his ride to the pits, done for the night. Brown continues to lead the way while Hughes and Tripp are giving the fans some great side-by-side action for fourth. Hughes takes fourth as Tripp settles into fifth. Lap 7 sees the first caution come out for Kevin Durden who has a left front tire down. Durden limps his machine into the pits as Brown takes the point on the restart followed by Medders, Hughes, Williams, and Jason Bennett.

On lap 10, Bennett brings out the caution as he spins at the bottom of turn 2. With Brown on the inside, Medders on the outside, Brown once again takes the point on the green. But three laps later, lap 13, the yellow comes out yet again for Mick Kulak who is limping his car towards the pits.

With Brown on the inside, Medders on the outside, Brown once again takes the point over Medders, Williams, Bubba Christian, and Hughes. Williams puts the heat on Medders but Medders quickly shuts the door.

Bubba Christian brings out the yellow on lap 17 as he has spun in turn 4 with a flat right front. Since the halfway point has been reached, it is now a single file restart as Brown leads the way over Medders, Williams, Hughes and Grady Christian. By lap 18, Williams now has second and has set his eyes on Brown in first. Lap 21 sees the yellow for Alan McCafferty who has paid a visit to the turn 1-2 wall. Suddenly McCafferty's steering just didn't want to steer as he made the visit to the wall. McCafferty rejoins the field in the rear for the restart.

Brown continues to lead the way on the restart followed by Williams, Hughes, Macnichol, and Medders. Grady Christian goes very high in turns 1 and 2 and finds himself sliding backwards towards the rear of the field which is a place Grady seldom visits. Williams goes on the outside of Brown, makes his move, makes it work and takes over the point on lap 24. Williams has a half car lead over Brown who has now come back to challenge Williams as they go side-by-side for the point.

Lap 26, Brown spins at the bottom of 4 and is now forced to go to the rear of the field for the restart. Williams leads the way on the green followed by Hughes, Macnichol, Medders and Tripp. Grady Christian challenges Tripp for fifth but Tripp closes the door keeping Christian in sixth place. Hughes, who is now running second, challenges Williams for the point but Williams will have nothing to do with it and quickly shuts that door. Williams holds on and takes the checkered for his first Street Stock win at Volusia Speedway Park over Tim Hughes, Charle Macnichol, Billy Medders, and Mike Tripp.

In Victory Lane, a very proud mom Earlene Williams, was able to see her son take the win. Earlene, who is the head scorer at Columbia Motorsports Park, was able to finally attend a race for her son since Columbia has now closed for the season. Also in Williams and Durden's pit was Lee Faulk, well known and loved Florida racer who does not visit enough. Nice to see both Earlene and Lee at Volusia.

Finally, it is time for the "Big" boys to come out for their forty lap feature and $2500 to win. On the pole was John Rankin but it was a complete restart on the green as Clyde Herron spins at the bottom of turn 1 on the start. With Rankin on the inside, Joe Kump on the outside, it is Kump who takes the point over Rankin, Jason Davis, Johnny Collins and Richard Ferry. Rankins wastes no time taking back the point as the yellow comes out on lap 1 for Shan Smith who has spun.

Once again it is Rankin on the inside, Kump on the outside for the restart as Rankin takes the point with Kump coming back and retaking the point. Lap 3 sees the yellow for Herron, Cory Hupp, and Howard Osteen who have gotten together in turn 3. With twenty two of the twenty five cars that originally started, it is Joe Kump taking the point followed by Rankin, Collins, Ferry, and Williams. Ferry passes Collins for third as Collins settles into fourth. By lap 9, Ferry has taken over the point followed by Kump, Collins, Rankin and Williams. Collins puts the heat on Kump but Kump shuts the door. However by lap 11, Collins takes over second and looks to Ferry for the point.

Ferry has built up a fifteen car lead over Collins followed by Lloyd, Kump and Williams. Tyler Ivey puts the heat on Jason Davis and by lap 21 takes over seventh. It is now Ferry, Collins, Lloyd, Williams and Rankin leading the way. Lloyd puts the heat on Collins and takes over second on lap 26. Ferry continues to lead the way however Lloyd is coming up fast. By lap 35, Lloyd is closing in on Ferry but Ferry wants this win. Ferry holds off Lloyd and takes the checkered followed by Ivedent Lloyd, Johnny Collins, Shane Williams, and John Rankin.

Volusia Speedway Park will be closed on October 17 but will return on October 24th with the United Dirt Late Model Series and the Late Model Fall Nationals. Also on the program will be the Modifieds, Street Stocks and Thunder Stocks.
