Tim Russell Wins the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Super Late Model Series Feature Race at ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley

September 26, 2009 {Bradenton, Florida.} What a magnificent evening of racing action at “The South’s Fastest Short Track” tonight. The weather was great and the racing action greater. It started at 7 PM and did not end until 12:15 AM. The $20 price for the ticket came out to under $4.00 per hour. That is an incredible value for the race fan, no doubt about it. The fans in attendance enjoyed non-stop action and thrills from the drop of the first green flag until flagman Bud waved the checkered flag for the School Bus Figure 8 race. In the spotlight tonight was the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Super Late Model Series along with the School Bus Figure 8’s and the Rockem-Sockem Bombers.

Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Series. The super late model boys arrived in style and gave the fans some heart pounding excitement as they drove 75 extremely fast laps in their feature race tonight. Winning the feature 75 lap event was Tim Russell in the #36 car. Scot Walters in the #55 car took a very respectable second place and Anthony Campi in the #81 car won third place. There was a bit of a scarey moment as Rick Wilson in the #1 W car went into the wall backwards and ruptured the fuel cell on his car. This sent gasoline pouring onto the track and had everyone on the track scurrying. The fire staff reacted very quickly and sprayed down the track to eliminate the worry of fire.

After towing the 1W car away it was back to racing and that is a credit to the staff, as they help keep the action flowing. There were two heat races for the Super Late Models tonight. The first 8 lap heat race was won by Jeff Scofield in the 21X car. The second heat race was won by Justin Larson in the #88 car. There was a dash for cash tonight as well. Joe Boyd in the #5 car won the dash for cash and really put on a show for the fans.

School Bus Figure 8’s. The School Bus Figure 8’s really put on a show tonight as 15 buses showed up to spread the love. When the #41 bus of Mike Volk went on its side the crowd went into a frenzy, yelling and screaming. Winning the 25 lap feature race was Earnest Helfrick in the #4 bus. The #4 bus had the front bumper falling off and creating sparks throughout the entire race, but it sure did not slow Helfrick down in the least. Taking second place was Michael Gamache in the #0 bus and third place belonged Mark Jackson in the #25 bus. What a thriller it was tonight.

Rockem-Sockem Bombers. It was a big night for the Rockem-Sockem Boyz as they went 50 laps for the first time this year. Drivers from all over the West Coast came to participate and they really put on a show that was so good it will earn them another shot at a Bomber 50 lapper again this year. The 50 lap feature race was won by Richie Shepherd in the #30 car. Coming in second was Jody Collins in the #32 car. Collins challenged Shepherd the entire race but could not pass for the lead. Winning third place was Steve Elder in the #42 car.

Everyone at Desoto Super Speedway would like to thank the drivers that came up from Charlotte Motor Park and helped make this a fantastic race, we all appreciate you being here. The Bomber heat races tonight were won by Michael Crooks in the #33 car in the first heat and Randy Spicer in the #83 car in the second heat race.
Street Stocks. The Street Stocks had a very low car count tonight. Winning the feature race of 15 laps was Dennis Wilson in the #42 car. Taking second in the feature was Derek Lucas in the #88 car and third place belonged to Mark Lau in the #13 car. Derek Lucas in the orange #88 car, also won the 6 lap heat race and did a great job of driving all night.

Pure Stocks. The wild and wonderful Pure Stocks were back in town and put on a display of racing talent like we are used to seeing come from them. “Rockin” Robert Crisp in the #2 car won the heat race. Winning the feature race tonight was Austin Craig in the #10 car. Taking second place was Troy Thiem in the #18 car while George Bartimac in the #21 car took third.

Magic 4’s. The kids of the Magic 4’s did a really good job of driving and competing cleanly tonight. Winning the feature 20 lap race was Brittany Barr in the #81 car. Taking second place was Dallas Troyer in the #01 car and Austin Cavey in the #20 car took the third place spot. Winning the heat race tonight was Joann Danielson in the #38 car. This was Joann’s first win in her rookie season.
Flyin 4’s.

The Flyin 4 class had an amazing 22 cars tonight. Thanks goes out to the drivers from Charlotte Motor Park for coming up and racing with us. There were 3 heat races tonight with Randy Johnson in the #01 car winning the first heat race. Rob Boos in the #21 car won the second heat race. Derek Horton in the #27 car won the third heat race. Winning the 25 lap feature race was Alex Patten in the #13 car. Second place was in the grasp of Jason Perkins in the #21R car and Randy Johnson in the #01 car was third.

It was a great night of racing for the fans and kudos’s to the ASA and Desoto Super Speedway Staff for a safe and thrill packed event.
Join us next Saturday for another night of racing action starting at 7 PM. Taking the asphalt oval will be Trucks 50 lap feature, Outlaw Modifieds, Street Stocks, Magic 4’s, Rockem-Sockem Bombers, and Flyin 4’s. Desoto Super Speedway is located just 9 miles east of I-75 on State Route #64. Check us out at www.desotosuperspeedway.com or call us at 941-748-3171. The entire staff at Desoto Super Speedway thanks the fans and will do everything possible to make your visit a pleasant one.
