Shane Williams Gets a Muddy Win at Ocala
by BJ Cavin

ZUBER, FL- After a week of rainy afternoons and evenings, Friday arrived with more clouds and rain in the Ocala area. But after a brief afternoon downpour the track crew at Ocala Speedway got busy and managed to get the clay into some form of racing shape just in time for a great night of action at Florida's oldest speedway. Clearing skies greeted the fans and racers who came to see the show, and a show is exactly what they got. Racers were less than thrilled at a very soft and slick track thanks to all of the rain, but everyone had to deal with the same conditions and those who found ways to cope rose to the top while others stumbled.

Joe Kump earned the pole position and led the field to the green as the Late Models had a go at the clay, but it was Shane Williams driving the 58 Dave's Towing machine that took control. Williams got out front and stayed there while a bevy of others mixed it up behind him. And it was that action from second on back that led to the only big incident in the race as the cars headed into the final turn.

Shan Smith attempted to get under Jason Fitzgerald for second place in turn 3 when the back end of Smith's car slid up and over the nose of Fitzgerald's machine. That caused Smith to spin in front of the field between turns 3 and 4, and some contenders behind him ended up piling on because of the slick conditions. Brandon DeWitt was running forth at the time and crashed into Smith, as Rich Pratt, Philip Cobb, and Christian Augspurger also were collected. The accident ended the night for Shan Smith, Brandon DeWitt, and Christian Augspurger, while Jason Fitzgerald, drove away with some minor damage and finished the race. That set up a one lap dash to the checkers that was won by Shane Williams, with Jason Fitzgerald following for second place. Joe Kump placed third while Ivedent Lloyd and J.O. Nobles rounded out the top five.

The Hobby Stocks found Trey Cameron on the pole, but no sooner did the green wave than David Kinsey jumped out front. Joe Boyd challenged for the lead on the following lap but could not get past Kinsey as Donnie Reed advanced forward and began making waves. Reed would haunt Kinsey for several laps before finally getting the lead on lap 13 and driving on to a victory. Mike Eubanks would battle his way to the second spot as Bubba Christian methodically made his way forward to claim third place. David Kinsey would settle for fourth place and Heath Walker would take fifth.

The fans saw Jessie Corbitt take control of the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock race on the first lap, and despite a concerted effort from Jerrid Bennett managed to hold off all contenders to lead virtually from flag to flag. But in Corbitt's case it is sometimes is not enough to finish first in order to win, and a post race disqualification for Corbitt would hand the win over to David Walls who had finished behind him on the track. So with Walls declared the winner, Terry Dunbar would get the second place finish while James Edwards claimed third. Jason Gamble struggled on the night and placed fourth, and Jerrid Bennett wound up in the fifth spot.

The Gladiators finished the night out with quite a race as two teammates fought hard for second place. While Harold Lewis jumped out front and hung on to grab his first win, Eddie Lentz and Austin Gamble put on quite a display fighting over the second spot. Lentz would win the battle and get the trophy for second while Gamble placed third. Youngster Devin Walker turned out to be a quick learner on his first venture out on the track, finishing fourth while Paul Hahn would struggle to a fifth place finish.
