IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
August 12, 2009
Open Wheel Modifieds Back in Action at Citrus County Speedway
8/8/09 By: Phil Schryver Inverness, FL It was a very hot and sticky night, but thankfully also rain free at Citrus County Speedway.

The first feature event of the night was the 4 Cylinder Stocks. The #47 of Richard Kuhn started on the pole and never looked back. Finishing 2nd was the #13 of Mike Ogren, and 3rd was the #21 of Phil Edwards.

The Pure Stocks rolled out next with lots of action and tons of passing for all 20 laps. The #51 of Curtis Flannagan, who started 10th, was on fire and shot to the front like a bullet to win the feature. At the end of the race he had at least a 3 ½ second lead on the rest of the field.

Third up was the Sportsman class. 19 cars were on hand to race for the checkered flag. At the drop of the initial green flag, the #57 of TJ Chambers got real loose coming off of turn 4 and caused a 3 car pile up. There was a ton of 3 wide racing, especially in the corners throughout the race. On lap 7, the #57 was running 2nd and turned the leader, the #1 car of Matt Blum around going into turn 1 and the #57 of Chambers ended up on top of the #1 car up against the wall in turn 1. Both cars had to retire early due to heavy damage. The #725 of John Grimm and the #5 of Mike Veltman battled door to door for the win after that, but ended up turning each other around, and had to both go to the rear of the field. The feature was won by the #15 of Joey Catarelli.

The Ministocks were next and were all very competitive. The #20 of Travis Hoefler had a great night especially. He started 5th, and finished 2nd, but had to fight off a lot of other cars to hold onto that spot. The winner tonight was the #62 Jesse Henley.

The Open Wheel Modifieds were up next, with 16 cars on hand. This was a 40 lap feature. Mark Nelson in the #11 started on the pole and held onto the lead for the 1st 24 laps. The #98 of Robbie Cooper battled door to door with Nelson for most of those laps. Finally, by lap 20, Nelson’s handling seemed to start going away and his car was getting loose. The #98 of Cooper was able to slip by on the outside, bringing the #19 of Tommy Schnader with him. The #98 of Cooper would go on to win the race.

The Figure 8’s were as wild and crazy as ever. The #8 of Darryl Hage was on the pole, and this was his first start of the 2009 season. The #83 of Charles Herne seemed to have some handling issues and actually brought out the 1st caution on the initial start. On the 2nd try for the start, the #29 of Neil Herne took a wild ride hitting and actually going over the wall in turn 2. He was reported to be ok. A lot more mayhem occurred on the 3rd and 4th starts, but finally the 5th start was the charm after the field started single file. The #8 of Darryl Hage came home first after threading the needle with ease through the x many times. The #89 of Rodney Davis did a great job holding off some tough competition to come home 2nd, and the #39 of Robbie Hage finished 3rd.

The last race of the night was the V8 Thunder Stocks. These guys and gals always put on a great show. The #31 of Austin Roberts, who started almost dead last, ended up the winner after making his way up front and then leaving the rest of the field in the dust.

Next week, August 15th, The Mini Cups will be back, also the Desoto Champ Karts will be on hand, plus all the regulars including mini stocks, street stocks, pure stocks, thunder stocks, and the Mike Scott Plumbing 4 cylinder stocks.
