Tripp takes Hobby Stock Win at Putnam County
|
by Jon Harney
SATSUMA, FL (5/7) - Shaun Daugharty has been the hot shoe in Hobby Stocks at Putnam County Speedway Park for the last few weeks and when he grabbed the lead from Martin Johnson on lap four he looked to have another win in the works.
Mike Tripp and Joe Watson made steady progress from their fourth row starting positions to get within sight of the leader. A tense moment for fans developed in the middle of the race when Michael Moore's car got involved in a multiple car wreck inside the fourth turn which required Moore to be carried out of his car by paramedics.
Moore was conscious throughout the ordeal and was taken in for an unscheduled pit stop at a local hospital for observation. Moore was banged up, but fortunately sustained no notable injuries and was released that evening. Daugharty was theleader when the race resumed, but the hounds were on his tail and beginning to wear him down.
Tripp made the race-winning pass on the twentieth lap and looked to be in top form this evening. Daugharty held off Watson for second, Josh Sanford was fourth, and William Martin was fifth.
Jason Lowe started at the front of the Modified feature. The race was lined up according to the running order of last week's feature at the time the races were rained out. Lowe was never seriously challenged from the opening green flag to the closing checkered flag. Kenny Blair earned another second place finish. Trailing Blair was Bobby Balcom, Kevin Byers, Sr., and Toby Sims.
The thirty-lap Limited Late Model special kept the fans entertained with a two car duel between Eric Platt and Brandon Cameron. The pair swapped positions once, then battled nose to tail through traffic. Platt got hung up behind a lapped car on lap 26 and Cameron took advantage of the pick to nab the lead and earn his second victory in 2005. Platt finished second ahead of Travis Rhoden, Tate Singler, and Sam Bass.
Martin Johnson led a 20-car Street Stock field to the green flag and enjoyed three laps on the throne before giving way to Toby Sims. Kenny Hall started in 19th but didn't stay there long as he rifled through the competition to eventually earn second in the running order. A late caution set up a two lap shootout between Sims and Hall. The duel was short-lived as Hall dropped out with mechanical failure. Sims stayed out of trouble for the remainder of the race and won. Ronnie Soltis took second, Mark Kinley was third,Richard Adams was fourth, and Johnson wound up fifth.
The Florida Minisprint Association was back in town with another high car count. Russ Heider held the lead despite tough competition from Rick Herrero in the initial stages. Jesse Teed overcame both Herrero and Heider on a restart for the point on lap seven and kept Heider and Paul Gottschalk at bay for the remainder of the event to capture victory. The finishing order was Teed, Gottachalk, Heider, T. J. Raymond, and John Craddock.
Casey Murphy took an easy win in Box Stock Minis over Art Souther, Jim Henderson, Bruce Denman, and Troy Kidd.
The Florida Sprint Car Association returns this Saturday night to do battle in the dirt. All regular PCSP divisions will also compete. Pits open at 3 PM, grandstands open at 5 PM, and racing begins at 7 PM.
