It's time to race!

July 21, 2001

Friday Night Racing at Five Flags Speedway

The Late Model race was started tonight without the points leader. His empty trailer sat in the infield with a sign reading, "Get Well Soon Tracy." Tracy Goodson was hospitalized last week when the main aorta going to his heart burst. The incident was not race related. He remains in critical condition at Baptist Hospital. Helmets were passed around in the grandstands to take up a collection for the hospital bills. Race fans gave $1,332 to help the Goodson family. When fans come together like that it makes me proud to be a race fan. Everybody please remember to keep the Goodson's in your prayers.

Scott Carlson qualified fastest with a lap time of 17.349 for the 35 lap Late Model feature even though he only had one lap to qualify because of an infraction on tech inspection. The field was inverted, however, and Carlson started second. Keith Thorpe who had the second fastest time of 17.352 started on the pole. It only took one lap for Carlson to take the lead. The race was caution free with Scott Carlson finishing 1st, Mike Arnold 2nd, Donald Long 3rd, Keith Thorpe 4th, and Rocky Boyd, Jr. 5th.

The points leader from the modifieds Jessie Allen spun in practice and did not get to race. The 25 lap race was led mostly by David Hutton who won the race. There were two cautions. The first caution came on lap 20 when Steve Williams got loose and spun in turn 3. The second caution came 1 lap later when three cars got together in turn 3. The cars involved were Steve Williams, Jacob Perimeter, and Jeff Godwin. The second place finisher was David Smith, 3rd Mike Cook, 4th Sammy McMullen, and 5th Chet Morrison.

The Super Stock 25 lap race started off with some excitement on the first lap when Scott Johnson and Joe Lowe got a little sideways coming down to take the green flag. Joe Lowe went on to take the lead and stayed there until there were about 10 laps to go. There were a couple cautions. One when Paul Dickerson blew a motor and the other when Johnny Warren, Jr. had a rear end problem. Kenny Williams finished 1st, Kevin Rahwinkel 2nd, Chris Neilson 3rd, Joe Lowe 4th, and Tommy Praytor 5th.

The 25 lap spectator race was run caution free, which doesn't happen often in that division. Brandon Vaughn led the entire race until he came up on a lap car on the last lap in turn four. Billy Hoover got around both cars on the outside for the win. Derrick Johnson finished 3rd, Sonny Holland 4th, and Wayne Burkett 5th.

Next Friday night, July 27, Five Flags Speedway will host The Southern All Star/AC Delco 200. Pit gate will open at 1:00pm. Grandstands open at 3:00pm and racing starts at 8:00pm.
