Adams Stauffer 2nd and 3rd in Alabama USCS Race

A capacity crowd saw United Sprint Car Series driver Jim Raptis of Marietta, GA break an asphalt win streak of nine U.S.C.S. races in a row by Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL. Adams didn't give up his record without a fight as he pressed Raptis hard for the last 21 laps of the U.S.C.S. Lamar Outdoor Advertising/UNP-TV Channel 15 sponsored 40-lap main event.

Raptis, in his Engine Research Inc. mount, treated the rocket city fans to an exciting race as he led the first five laps of the event before loosing the point to a fast Chris Rogers of Winston, GA as the two mixed it up in traffic. Rogers worked the quarter-mile track with Raptis on his nerf-bar for the next 14 laps. And while this Rogers/Raptis battle was racing another war was being fought between Kenny Adams and his car owner, Red Stauffer of Winter Park, GA.On lap 19 Rogers closed too quickly on traffic and touched wheels with lapped car causing Rogers to crash into the outside retaining wall in between turns three and four. One lap after the green flag restart Adams made the pass on teamowner Stauffer and began his assault on Raptis. The two veteran racers had the fans standing and cheering as Adams tried every inch of the race track to defeat Raptis but to no avail.

Raptis shut the door on each try as Adams smoked his tires in frustration. The final countdown had Raptis blasting to his first U.S.C.S. win with the team of Adams and Stauffer having to settle for second and third. In the fourth position it was 7-time national champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN followed by Jim McKenzie of Buford, GA in the fifth spot. Rounding out the sixth through tenth positions were Ted Williams of Atlanta, GA in sixth, Marshall Skinner of West Memphis, AR in seventh, Doug Day of Winder, GA in eighth, Bill Moore of Denver, NC in ninth, and Brian Thomas of Buford, GA in the tenth position.
