SANDS TOPS VOLUSIA CLASSICS CLOSER

It was only an oversight on the rules that cost Robbie Sands of Knoxville, TN a clean sweep of the weekend's Classic Auto Racing Series action at the Volusia Speed Park asphalt track.

Sands won the opener on Friday night and crossed the line first on Saturday only to have that victory denied him when the post-race inspection found his cars' ride-height to be too low. That handed the second night win to Newport TN's Jackie Kelley. Sands shrugged off the infraction, made the necessary changes and promptly drew the pole for Sunday's finale.

Sands immediately took control placing his "32 Ford sedan out front at the start of the 20-lapper. Kelley tried to keep pace but Bill Brown, Jr. of Mt Airy, MD slipped by to get second spot just before the only caution came out on lap 6 for a turn two spin by E.T. McGhee.

From that point, Sands just reeled off the laps as Brown held Kelley at bay and the trio finished in that order. Don Kirk drove his best race of the Winternationals as the Ellicot City, MD driver came home fourth ahead of Orlando FL's Eddie Thornton.

Thornton won the qualifying heat by dodging a last-lap scramble that sent Dan Hammerbeck's machine into the tire barrier at the pit entrance.Twenty-one cars competed during the weekend but crashes and engine woes decimated the field to just eleven by feature time Sunday. The Classic Auto Racing Series opens its 2001 season on Saturday night, March 24 at JAX Raceways, just north of Jacksonville, FL.
