Night 2 of Volusia Asphalt

by Dave Westerman
There was action aplenty as night number two unfolded at the Galaxy Motorsports Pavement Winternationals at the Volusia Speedway Park asphalt track.

Tommy Jordan of Hartsville SC repeated in the Legends Masters division in a wild 20-lap race that saw two red flags for Charlie Daniels' (Albuquerque NM) flip in turn two and when Jim Cribbs (Muncie, IN) slid off the track trying to avoid another tangle and hit the Volusia Speedway fire truck. Fortunately, no one was hurt in either incident. Jordan then took advantage of a tangle by then-leaders Fred Hardwick (Dandridge, TN) and Cy Harvey (Elmsdale, Ont. Canada) to get the top spot and the win. Jordan had to win the B-main just to get in the feature and came from 22nd on the grid to the victory. Brett Jursik (Doylestown, OH), Cotton Spry (Salibury, NC) and Mark Michael (Americus, GA) trailed Jordan to the checker while Harvey blasted back through the field to get fifth. Heat race wins went to Harvey and Hardwick.

The Legends Pro/Semi-Pro 20-lapper was much tamer as Johnathan Davenport (Blairsville, GA) took advantage of a late caution flag and powered his way to his second win in as many nights. Eric King (Hartsville, SC) was second followed by Walt "Blue Light" Brannen (Elko, GA), Todd Fenoff (Mooresville, NC), and Andy Logan (West Palm Beach, FL). King, Davenport, and Donny Lia (Merricle, VT) took the heat wins.

Following a red flag to clean up a brutal frontstretch crash involving teammates Larry Gibson (Seymour, TN) and Mark Williams (Maryville, TN), Robbie Sands (Knoxville, TN) looked to have also posted his second victory in as many nights in the Classic Auto Racing Series feature. But his mount failed post-race inspection handing the win to Newport TN's Jackie Kelley. Bill Brown, Jr. (Mt Airy, MD), Bart Baxter (Dandridge, TN), Ed Yates (Orlando, FL), and Jim Rahman (Clermont, FL) rounded out the top five. Sands and Brown, Jr. took the heats.

Mechanical failures again hurt the early leaders in the Modified Lite main event allowing Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN to post his second straight win. Josh Adams (Cottontown, TN) was a close second ahead of Jon Calloway (Harrington, DE), Jamie Crutchfield (Chickamaugua, GA), and Gerald Smith (Kingsport, TN). The four heats for the 48 Mod Lites on hand were won by Tom Buckingham (Morristown, TN), Calloway, Adams, and Shannon Buckingham. Rob Roney (Fenton, MI) won the B-main.

Chattanooga TN's Rusty Hogue took advantage of some bumping and banging between leaders Jon Calloway and Keith Brooks (Nashville, TN) to slip past and garner the win in the Pro Challenge division feature. Calloway backed up his third place finish in the Mod Lites with a runner-up in this race with Brooks coming back for third over Jason Kennedy (Murfreesboro, TN) and opening night winner Mac Williams (Murfreesboro, TN). Heat race wins went to Calloway and Brooks.

Steve Mendenhall outran Jimmy Peryam and Alan Canady to win the Baby Grand feature while Rick Epperson totally dominated the Outlaw Late model class.
