CLOSE RACING, BIG CRASH, AND DQ = NIGHT TWO OF CLASSICS AT VOLUSIA

by Dave Westerman
The 20-lap feature for the Classic Auto Racing Series had it all Saturday night during night two of the Galaxy Motorsports Pavement Winternationals at the Volusia Speedway Park asphalt track. Opening night winner Robbie Sands of Knoxville, TN picked up where he left off, dominating action in the first heat while Mt. Airy, MD driver Bill Brown, Jr. shook off his opening night mechanical woes to take heat two.Sands immediately took control of the feature from his pole starting spot with Jackie Kelley (Newport, TN) in tow.

At the completion of lap one, Seymour TN's Larry Gibson spun his mount out of turn four and found himself in the middle of the track on the front straightaway with cars dodging him on either side. Only his teammate, Mark Williams (Maryville, TN) was unable to avoid Gibson and smashed into Gibson's car with an impact that could be felt in the pit area grandstand. Although both drivers were badly shaken, both Gibson and Williams were able to walk away with only minor bumps and bruises. The same could not be said for their cars which are now junk and done for the remainder of the series.

On the restart, the field only made it to turn two before Jesse Teaster (Maryville, TN) spun. However, this time nobody hit Teaster and he was able to continue. Sands then drove off to an apparent victory slowed only once more for Dan Hammerbeck's stalled car in turn two. After the race, Sands' car failed to meet the proper ride-height rule and he was disqualified handing the win to Jackie Kelley who enjoyed the fruits of victory after opening-night engine problems forced him out early. Following Kelley were Bill Brown, Jr., Bart Baxter (Dandridge, TN), Ed Yates (Orlando, FL), and Jim Rahman (Clermont, FL). The final night of the Classic Auto Racing Series Winternational action is Sunday at Volusia Speedway Park.
