FIVE DRIVERS SHARE LAURELS ON VOLUSIA ASPHALT

by Dave Westerman

Action was hot and heavy Friday night as the Galaxy Motorsports 2001 Pavement Nationals kicked off six nights of racing at Volusia Speedway Park's 3/8 mile asphalt track with five divisions in action.

Forty-nine Modified Lites were on hand with heat race wins going to Doug Carrigan (Murfreesboro, TN), Shannon Buckingham (Morristown, TN), Jamie Crutchfield (Chickamauga, GA), and Josh Adams (Cottontown, TN). Carrigan looked to have the field covered in the 20-lap feature leading from the pole but his "Plum Crazy" machine suffered mechanical failure with two laps to go handing the win to Shannon Buckingham. Adams was a close second ahead of Rob Roney (Fenton, MI), Kelly Glass (Jonesborough, TN), and Tom Buckingham (Morristown, TN).

Rick Lundeen (Jacksonville, FL) won the Mod Lite B-Main. In Legends car action, The Pro/Semi-Pro 20-lapper was won by Johnathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA who led every lap from the pole. Eric King (Hartsville SC) was second trailed by Jeff Burton (Kent, OH), Cassius Clark (Farmington, ME), and Walt "Blue Light" Brannen (Elko, GA). Heats were won by Davenport, Clark, and Burton, with the B-Main going to Mobile AL's Ronald Beasley.

The Legends Masters 20-lap feature was taken by Tommy Jordan of Hartsville, NC who led all the way despite constant pressure from Salisbury NC veteran Cotton Spry. Third went to Fred Hardwick (Dandridge, TN) in front of Steve Michael (Eatonton, GA) and Ronny Powers (Clarksville, TN). Heat races were won by Jordan and Cy Harvey (Elmsdale, Ont., Canada).

Knoxville, TN's Robbie Sands dominated the Classic Auto Racing Series feature, dodging numerous crashes and spins to take the win. Tennessee drivers swept four of the top five spots with Larry Gibson (Seymour, TN) taking second with Bart Baxter (Dandridge, TN) third, Ed Yates (Orlando, FL) claimed fourth ahead of Jesse Teaster (Maryville,TN). Heats went to Sands and Baxter.

The Pro Challenge feature was a green to checker victory for Mac Williams of Murfreesboro, TN. Williams held off a late challenge from Keith Brooks (Nashville, TN) to take the win. Jason Kennedy (Murfreesboro, TN), and Bennie Hoover (Shelbyville, TN) were third and fourth while the passing job of the night went to John Calloway (Harrington, DE) who came from 18th on the starting grid to finish fifth.

Action continues Saturday, Feb 10th at Volusia Speedway Park's asphalt track with heats starting at 4PM and freatures at 7:30PM.
