| Steve Whitener Late Model Winner at JAX | May 15, 2000 (By: Donnie Helmly) Jacksonville, Florida: Race fans at Jax Raceways saw something never witnessed at the NASCAR sanctioned half mile dirt track in recent history. One driver, winning three events.
The Late Model division competed in a pair of 15 lap feature events, in order to make up for a non points paying event from a week ago, and catch them up with the rest of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series tracks across the region. Former division champion Steve Whitener of Middleburg set fast time in qualifying, turning in a lap time of 18.969, putting him on the pole position. David Crews turned in the second fastest with a lap of 19.032, that put him along Whitener's side for the start of the first feature.
Whitener wasted little time when the green flag flew as he took off in the lead with defending 1999 champion Jeff Godbee in second. Godbee made every attempt to make the pass for the top spot, but settled for second at the stripe. Crews followed in third, with Joshua Manning, and point's leader Michael Murrer making up the top five.
The track then spun the wheel to determine the line up of the second 15-lap feature, and the luck went to Whitener, as the wheel stopped on the zero. Whitener, proved to be to strong for Godbee once again, and took home top honors in the second event as well, with Godbee in second, Crews in third, and Manning and Murrer following to make up the top five.
Whitener, however, wasn't finished there as he once again found the winners circle, this time in the Open Wheel Modified division. Marty Whitener took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led the first lap, when he pitted for mechanical failure. Doodle Pipken took over for the next five laps, until Steve Whitener took the top spot and held on to claim his third trophy of the night. Kenny and Kevin Bayless crossed the line in second and third. Keny Porter and Eddie Holton made up the top five.
Windal Clark showed once again why he is the current point's leader in the Pure Stock division. Clark started on the outside pole, and led every lap, to claim his fifth win of the 2000 season. Pole sitter Robert Hyers followed Clark for 9 circuits, and then pitted on lap 10 with mechanical trouble. Priscilla Yergy took over the second spot and followed Clark to the line, with Karen Moon, Bobby Simmons and John Taylor rounding out the top five.
Chad Grogan set fast time in the Sportsmen division turning the half mile "D" shaped oval in 20.727 seconds to sit on the pole for the 20 lap feature event. Bobby Padgett set second fastest with a 20.823 to place him on the outside pole. Padgett took the lead from the drop of the green flag, with Grogan in tow. Grogan fell out when he pitted on lap 4, putting Joey Miller in the second spot and points leader Gary Godwin in third. Miller and Godwin made many attempts to take the front spot, but crossed the stripe in that order. Miller filed a protest against the engine in Padgett's car, but the protest found Padgett to be legal and the finished stood firm.
Julia Callaway took top honors in the Powder Puff feature beating out Kim Lester and Shelly Meyers. Action at Jax Raceways will resume tomorrow night and will include the Florida Sprint Car association along with four regular speedway divisions. Lumber Unlimited Late Model Division (Feature #1)
