Orlando Reopens with Finney taking the Super Late Model Win | by Jane Smith
Orlando, FL (October 2, 2009) Orlando SpeedWorld had their grand re-opening last night with 83 cars in the pits and lots of racing action from Super Late Models to Bandoleros. Ten divisions took to the track with the Strictly Stocks having twin 20's. The entire field was inverted from the first race which made a very interesting and exciting second feature.
Legends saw Zach Harris with the pole for their twenty five lap feature. Harris was able to hold off Alex Kempf for the first few laps but it was Kempt who took the checkered flag in the end. Eight cars were in the field, which was pretty good since the Legends have a tour race tonight at Citrus County Speedway. With no cautions, it was an action packed feature as Alex Kempt took the checkered followed by Zach Harris, Mason Ketterman, Rick Whitmore, and Ted Ruffo.
Taking the Bandolero Bandit win was Tanner Cornwell followed by Noah Corman, and Michael Held. Winning the Bandolero Young Gun feature was Mark Hooven followed by Dan Binda, Coty Bibeau, and Donovan Ponder.
The Taylor Racing Products Pro Trucks saw Sean Bass on the pole for their twenty five lap feature. Bass quickly took the point on the green followed by Ben Kennedy, Zach Curtis, Scott Reeves, and Whitney Poole. Reeves passes Curtis and takes over third. Kennedy puts pressure on Bass but Bass quickly shuts the door.
The caution comes out for a spin at the bottom of turn 4 and the field is quickly realigned for the restart with Bass on the inside, Kennedy on the outside. This time is it Kennedy who takes the point over Bass, Reeves, Curtis and Poole. Curtis gets very loose but it able to correct and the field remains racing. Reeves passes Bass for second. The caution comes out again for David Groah who spun high in turn 3.
The field goes back green as Kennedy leads the way over Reeves, Sergi, Bass and Curtis. Kennedy continues to lead the way and takes the checkered over Anthony Sergi, Scott Reeves, Tim Sozio and Sean Bass.
The first race of the Strictly Stocks saw Danny Binda on the pole for the twenty lap feature but before a lap was down, Bob Sullivan hit the wall hard high in turn 3. Sullivan was fine. Binda and Tim Walters, Jr. also got some of the action were out of the race before it begun. This put Steve Daniels on the pole for the restart. Eleven cars were now left out of the original fourteen that started.
Scott Brunfield took the point over William Hindman but spins at the bottom of turn 4 but continues on giving the point over to Hindman followed by David Leeper, Chris Brannon, Art Hendren, and Bruce Gayton. The caution comes out for debris on the track. Hindman once again takes the point on the green followed by Brannon, Leeper, Gayton, and Todd McCreary.
McCreary, who prefers to start in the rear no matter what he draws, is working his way up towards the front and Hindman. But with two laps to go and McCreary leading, he feels he has a tire coming apart and sees part of a tire on the track and believes it just might be his and retires from the race on the white flag lap giving the lead over to Chris Brannon. McCreary discovers after the race that it is indeed not his tire but he did not want to wreck his car or someone else.
Chris Brannon takes the checkered followed by William Hindman, Bruce Gayton, Tom Rose, and Art Hendren. Now remember, the entire field will be inverted for the second race.
It was now time for the "BIG" boys to show their stuff to the fans. Jared Allison, who will be showing off his new dirt modified soon at Volusia Speedway Park, had the pole for the 35 lap Super Late Model feature. Allison quickly took the point over Russ Moore, Brian Finney, Jason Vail and Richard Douglas.
Shaughn McCormick, who came from the Legends, had to retire his Super Late Model due to mechanical problems leaving nine cars in the field. Allison continues to lead the way as Finney passes Moore for second with Moore in third, Vail in fourth and Douglas in fifth. Vail puts the heat on Moore and takes over third as John Kennedy retires his ride to the pits.
Robert Jenkins retires his car to the pits, now leaving only seven in the feature. Allison continues to lead the way over Finney, Vail, Moore and Douglas. Vail puts the heat on Finney and takes over second as Finney goes to third. Corey Kaiser brings out the caution as he spins in turns 1 and 2. Kaiser is pushed into the pits, done for the night as the safety crew clean the track for fluids.
With six cars left for the restart, it is Allison on the inside, Vail on the outside. But it takes two more restarts before the race sees green again. Vail, who jumped the start, was sent to the rear for the final restart putting Allison and Finney side-by-side for the green. This time it is Finney who gets the point as he and Allison are so close, their tires are rubbing. But it is a short green as Richard Douglas spins in turns 1 and 2.
With Finney on the inside, Allison on the outside, Allison takes the point but it is another short green as Moore and Vail get together in turns 3 and 4 with Vail spinning. At this point, Mark Adams retires his ride to the pits. Allison on the inside, Finney on the outside, Finney takes the point over Allison, Moore, Vail and Douglas. Vail takes a look on the outside of Moore but Moore quickly shuts the door. Douglas retires to pit road leaving only Finney, Allison, Moore and Vail left racing.
Allison pulls right to the rear bumper of Finney but must let off his charge as he gets alittle squirrelly, leaving Finney at the point. Finney holds off Allison and takes the checkered over Jared Allison, Russ Moore, and Jason Vail. On the cool down lap, Vail and Moore exchange alittle "how do you do" and go into the pits.
Chad Pierce led the Modified feature from green to checkered. With no cautions, it was action packed as Alan Bruns tried and tried but could not take the point away from Pierce. Mark Emberson passed Andy Saffioti for third as Matt Wheeler followed in fifth. Bruns had nothing for Pierce as Pierce took the checkered over Alan Bruns, Mark Emberson, Andy Saffioti, and Matthew Wheeler.
It was nice to see Pete Wiloughby in the pits as he spotted for Saffioti in the Modified feature. Willoughby, who is Barry Willoughby's father, has not been around for awhile since Barry moved to Seattle with his job. Pete was a long time racer at Hialeah Speedway back when Dickie Anderson ran there alot. Nice to see Pete back again.
Sportsman saw Duane Best on the pole for their feature as Best took the point on the green followed by Andy Nicholls, Justin Reynolds, Ed Michalak, and Randy Poole. The caution comes out for Justin Reynolds who spun coming off turn 2. The race goes back green with Best on the inside, Nicholls on the outside as they go side-by-side for the point. Best wins the battle but sees his night cut short as he goes up in smoke and hits the turn 3 wall. Only four cars remain.
Nicholls takes the point on the restart as Reynolds goes side-by-side with him. Nicholls wins and takes the point followed by Reynolds, Michalak and Poole. Reynolds tries everything to take the point but each time, Nicholls shuts the door. However, on the last lap, Reynolds is finally able to take the point and the checkered over Andy Nicholls, Ed Michalak, and Randy Poole.
Mini Stocks saw Pedie Allison go from green to checkered for their feature. Allison had the pole and quickly took the point on the green followed by Rex "Boneman" Hollinger, David Russell, Matt Perkins, and Jim Erb. Erb puts the heat on Perkins and takes over fourth as Perkins goes to fifth. Suddenly Perkins begins to smoke and is forced to retire his ride to the pits bringing out the caution.
Allison once again takes the point on the restart followed by David Russell, Jim Erb, Boneman, and Mark Avery. With no cautions, it continues this way until Avery is forced to retire also to the pits turning over fifth to Randy Blakeslee. Allison takes the checkered followed by David Russell, Jim Erb, Rex "Boneman" Hollinger, and Randy Blakeslee.
Denny Johns had the pole for the Super Stock feature but it was John Bennett who took the point on the green followed by Billy Cuddy, Johns, Brian Lynch, Sr., and Justin Reynolds. But Cuddy was on the move as he takes over the point from Bennett. Reynolds, who worked his way to third, is forced to retire to the pits making the new running order Cuddy, Bennett, Johns, Brent Tyler, and David Gould. The caution comes out for Shannon Kelly who spun coming off turn 2.
With Cuddy on the inside, Bennett on the outside, Cuddy once again takes the point but the yellow comes out for Lynch who has hit the turns 1 and 2 all hard. Lynch is fine but done for the night. The green comes back out as Cuddy leads the way over Bennett, Tyler, Johns and Gould. Woody Strickland brings out the caution as he hits the frontstretch wall.
With ten laps to go, Cuddy once again takes the point over Bennett, Tyler, Johns and Gould. Brent takes over second with Gould right on his heels for third as Bennett settles into fourth. Bennett puts the heat on Gould and retakes third putting Gould fourth. The caution comes out for Danny Frye who spun in turn 2. With Cuddy on the inside, Tyler on the outside, Cuddy once again takes the point over Gould, Tyler, Bennett and Johns. Suddenly Tyler's car is not moving and the caution comes out for the stalled car in turn 3.
It is a one lap dash to the checkered as Cuddy leads the way and takes the win over David Gould, John Bennett, Denny Johns, and Brian Lynch, Jr.
The final race of the night is the second feature for the Strictly Stock Twin 20's. Remember, the field is completely inverted from the first race putting David Lepper on the pole for the second feature. But after several failed starts, Leeper is taken off the pole and replaced by Art Hendren. Hendren takes the point on the green followed by Neil Kirby, William Hindman, Todd McCreary, and Glenn Rhodes. Hendren and Kirby get together causing Kirby to spin in turns 1 and 2 but Kirby was able to get going fast with no caution coming out.
With no cautions, William Hindman led the way over McCreary, Rhodes, Leeper, and Tom Rose. Kirby is moving back up as he passes Rose for fifth. Hindman is doing everything he can to keep McCreary from taking over the point but eventually McCreary gets the point and takes the checkered over Neil Kirby, William Hindman, Glenn Rhodes, and David Leeper.
