Preacher Feature Steals the Show at Ocala

by BJ Cavin

ZUBER, FL- An almost perfect night for racing greeted fans and racers at Florida's oldest race track on Friday night, as the Second Annual Church Night featuring Faster Pastor Racing was a huge success! And the crowd enjoyed quite a competitive show from the pastors and they battled on the speedway. Defending Fastor Pastor Champion, Larry Miller, was unable to cope with Mark Capps of Floral City, who won the race with speed and a sharp eye for trouble ahead,

In addition to the Fastor Pastors, the Open Wheel Modifieds were racing. Jeff Mathews had claimed the pole, but a $100 challenge was put up and accepted, which sent Mathews to the rear of the field. The 33 car was fast, and Mathews picked his way through the field to the front without too much trouble as the crowd cheered him on. But in the end he only made it to second before the laps ran out.

Kyle Owen was the leader for most of the race, but once Rob Underwood got past him Owen faded a bit. Underwood led the final 5 laps to claim the win, followed by Mathews and Owen. John Bradley raced his way to a fourth place finish while Gary Sexton rounded out the top 5.

The Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks were gearing up for next week's $1000 to win races as they hit the clay, with the Hobby Stocks getting off to a rather rough beginning. But after some initial rubbing and bumping the racers settled down and raced, with Mike Eubanks out front. Eubanks eventually fell victim to Grady Christian in the 36, and Christian never looked back. Grady Christian scored a win, followed by a hard charging Joe Boyd for second and Mike Eubanks in third. Heath Walker and Donnie Reed rounded out the top five.

Jeff Stalnaker started the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock race dead last, but never gave up and fought his was forward through the field. Moving forward with Stalnaker was Chris Fontaine and Jason Gamble, but it was Stalnaker managed to get out front and stay there to win the race. Chris Fontaine settled for second place while Jason Gamble climbed into the third spot. David walls hung tight to take home fourth, while Sean Babcock claimed fifth.

The Mini Stocks saw a familiar face in Victory Lane as Keith Briggs posted yet another win. Briggs came from the rear to the front to claim the win, fighting his way through traffic to get the job done. Calvin Christian raced hard and took the second place award while Paul Combast settled for third, with Johnny Zackery and Buddy Pope fourth and fifth.

And the Gladiators saw a second time winner in Harold Lewis, who had the dominant car all night. Casey Feaster put a front row starting position to good use by bringing home a second place finish, while Steve Cox held tough for the third place. Steve Johnson raced the X8 car to fourth place while Devin Walker was scored in fifth place.

Fans will be admitted to Ocala Speedway for just $8 per person with kids 12 and under free next Friday, October 9th. And for that $8 admission fans will see a $2000 to win Late Model race, a $1000 to win Hobby Stock feature, plus a $1000 to win outing for the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks. The Gladiators will also be running. Gates will open at 5PM with hot laps at 7PM.
