TBARA RACE RESULTS FROM MOBILE INT'L. SPEEDWAY, IRVINGTON, ALA.
by Marty Little
IRVINGTON, Ala. - It was round two of the Florabama TBARA Tour on the Gulf Coast, but the like the night previous at Five Flags in Pensacola the man on top when the checkers waved after 30 laps was David Steele and his fleet No. 14 winged sprinter.
Tommy Nichols brought the 18 car field to the green flag and set the pace for the first three laps until a yellow waved for Wendy Mathis who stopped her car on the backstretch with driveline failure. When the green waved again it was still Nichols in command but Steele, who'd started 12th, had the wick turned up and was coming strong.
Steele displaced Nichols for the lead on lap seven and set sail around the banked half-mile oval, his favorite type of track. Troy DeCaire closed the gap as lapped traffic slowed Steele briefly until a lap 18 yellow flag for a spin by Dustin Perez who collected Dave Shotsberger in the process.
Once the debris was cleaned up and the green waved again it was all Steele who simply motored away to a 10 car length victory over DeCaire. Rookie Greg Leonard was third ahead of Joey Aguilar, Shane Butler and Nichols.
