Scott Thompson Memorial Only Three Days Away and Right Around the Corner | by Jane Smith
Barberville, FL (June 24, 2009) The Fourth Annual Scott Thompson Memorial United Dirt Late Model Challenge 50 will be held this Saturday, June 27th, at Volusia Speedway Park. This event, in honor of Scott Thompson will pay $3800.00 with the leader on lap 38 taking home a bonus of $380.00.
This event promises to be one of the biggest Late Model events in Florida and many drivers are expected to be in the field including last year's winner Johnny Collins, Ivendent Lloyd, Lawton Minchew, Stanton Mills, Dillon Wood, Jason Fitzgerald, Rob Underwood, Matt Hartley, Mark Whitener, Keith Nosbich just to name a few.
Ivedent Lloyd just won the 14th Annual Powell Memorial last Friday night at Ocala Speedway and turned around Saturday night and won the Late Model feature at Volusia Speedway Park in David Clegg's #07 Late Model. With two wins under his belt in one weekend, Lloyd will definitely be looking for that magic third win in a row.
To increase the magic of Saturday night, there will also be a Tailgating Competition and a special appearance by Cubby from the Daytona Cubs. Fans are encouraged to participate in VSP's special "Tailgating Competition" and have some fun.
And if you love firewords, well, they are fireworks on the program for Saturday night.
Fans will also see racing action by the Sportsman, Street Stocks, and a special Mini Stock race with $1000 to win sponsored by Lake Jem Farms.
Last year's Scott Thompson Memorial was held on July 14th. General Manager Tonya Moschell had this to say about last year's event. "I think the most important thing for everyone to understand is that this will be the biggest late model race on dirt in Florida this season. They definitely do not want to miss this and if they pick one event this summer to attend, this is it."
"It is our Scott Thompson Memorial event, and we have been able to combine the efforts of the United Dirt Late Model Series and the National Late Model Series to bring to Volusia Speedway what promises to be the biggest late model event of the season, in Florida or in the Southeast for that matter." Last year's event had about 60 entries for the 50 lap race.
Scott Thompson was an enormously popular racer; he was the Volusia Speedway Park Late Model Track champion in 2005 and was competing for 2006 National Late Model Series Rookie of the Year. He tragically lost his life in May of that year, in a non-racingrelated auto accident.
Friday night at Volusia there will be open practice for all divisions from 6 pm to 9 pm. Cost is $15.00 per person with grandstands FREE for anyone who wishes to watch practice.
