Wild Night at Orlando Speedworld

by Jane Smith

Bithlo, Fla. (October 17, 2003) There was NO full moon hanging over the track, the guys raced last weekend so it was not the "no racing" crazies, just one of those nights full of wild events.

Features only were run but due to the water barrel at the back pit road entrance being hit and flooding the Bandolero track, the Bandoleros will have double features next Friday night instead. It rained early in the evening and although track officials tried to dry the Bandolero track, it was hard. Once the water flooded turns 1 and 2 from the barrel, officials decided that it was just not safe for the Bandoleros.

Twenty three Super Stocks qualified for the 50 lap feature with Bob Beiler from Melbourne taking the pole in his No. 44 "Banana Boat". But in tech, Beiler was found to have too much left side weight and was disqualified and started the event in the rear. This put the "Big Mean 98 Machine" of Bobby Woodley of Palm Bay on the pole.

As the green was thrown, Sean Bass in the No. 17 took the lead over Woodley, Ted Head, Brent Brown, and Jim "Hoot" Flynn. Brown passed Woodley with Flynn coming along for the ride taking over second and third and Woodley slipping back to fourth. Jeff Colburn took over fifth passing Woodley for fourth and Woodley settling down in fifth.

Adam Bultemeier brought out the caution as his engine starting to go on the frontstretch and finally stopped in turn 2. Bultemeier was fine but disappointed to be out of the race so early.

On the restart, Brown powers to the lead with Flynn, Bass, Colburn and Andy Nichols in the top five. But it was a short green as the yellow came out for Bob Beiler and Brian Soukup who had spun in turn 1. The race goes back green and it is Flynn now to the point over Brown, Colburn, Bass and Nichols.

Another short green as Bobby Woodley brought out the caution when he spun on the frontstretch. The race goes back green with Flynn, Colburn, Bass, Nichols and Bill Loomis in the top five. Another short green as the yellow is shown for debris on the track.

Flynn holds the point on the restart but Colburn is close behind. Colburn puts the pedal down and passes Flynn taking over first. Flynn slides back to second with Bass, Nichols and Brown in the top five.

The yellow is thrown again for Mike Soukup who has a blown tire and goes into the pits. At the same time, Bobby Riley spins avoiding the slowing car of Soukup. The race returns to green with Colburn on the point followed by Flynn, Bass, Nichols, Brown, Jeff Wright, Bob Beiler, Bill Loomis, Cory Freed, and John Castro in the top ten.

The red flag comes out when Robert Ward, John Bennett, and Brian Anderson all tangle at the bottom of turns 1 and 2. All three drivers are fine but their cars are done for the night. Andy Nichols spun on the frontstretch as the cars slowed for the yellow then red flag.

The cars were towed off and the track crew cleaned the track. The race goes back green but just as it went green, it goes yellow for Brent Brown and Bob Starr who have tangled in turn 1. Colburn holds the point on the restart followed by Flynn, Bass, Nichols and Wright. The yellow is thrown again for John Castro who hit the turn 2 wall hard. Castro and Loomis were racing hard in turn 1 with Castro touching Loomis's tire which sent him straight into the wall. Castro was fine and admitted it was "just a mistake" but his car is done for the year.

Colburn holds the point again on the restart with Flynn, Bass, Nichols and Loomis in fifth. Loomis finds his hands full as Ted Head is right on his rear and looking for fifth. Just as they got hot and heavy, the caution came out for Brian Soukup and Brent Brown who have tangled in the bottom of turn 4.

Colburn holds the point on the restart followed by Flynn, Bass, Nichols and Ted Head. Bass slips back but later it was told that his shifter had popped out and he was racing one handed. As Bass slips back, Nichols takes over third with Ted Head in fourth and Bill Loomis in fifth.

Colburn takes the checkered followed by Flynn, Nichols, Head and Loomis. In tech, Colburn refused to tear-down and the win was given to Jim "Hoot" Flynn for his second 50 lap Super Stock win. Jeff Wright moved into fifth.

Lynn Dicandio had the pole for the Open Wheel Modified feature race and jumped to the lead on the green but before a lap was down the yellow was thrown for Ron McCreary who had spun on the backstretch. The field was realigned for a complete restart with Dicandio on the pole and taking the lead once again on the green.

The yellow comes out again for Dink Sullivan and Shane Held who have tangled at the bottom of turn 3. The race goes back green with Dicandio in the lead followed by Michael Williams, Matt Wheeler, Glen Bradley and Dave Riley. But another short green as the yellow is thrown for Dink Sullivan who has spun on the frontstretch.

Dicandio holds the lead but it is Michael Williams who passes Dicandio and takes over the point with Dicandio in second followed by Wheeler, Bradley, and Riley. Ron McCreary brings out the yellow again as he spun at the bottom of turns 1 and 2.

Williams holds the point on the restart but again a short green as Kevin McCracken hits the turn 3 wall hard when he and Sullivan slightly touch coming off the backstretch. McCracken is fine but his car is towed into the pits. Williams holds the point on the final restart and takes the checkered followed by Lynn Dicandio, Matt Wheeler, Ron McCreary, and Ricky Moxley.

Kory Kaiser holds the pole for the Sportsman feature and quickly jumps to the lead followed by David Lebeau, Justin Hall, Danny Shearer, and Bill Hall. Bruce Gayton brings out the yellow as he spun in turn 1.

Kaiser holds the point on the restart but Richard Hight passes Kaiser and takes over the point. Just as the race is getting hot, Justin Hall and David Lebeau lock bumpers coming off turn 2 and find themselves sitting in the infield, locked together. Quickly they are unlocked but Hall is done and Lebeau is able to continue.

The lead is given back to Kaiser due to the caution but it does not take Hight long before he has the point once again followed by Kaiser, Shearer, Gayton, and Hall.

Gayton's car begins to smoke and the flagman black flags Gayton with the caution coming out to check the track for fluids. On the restart, it is Hight, Kaiser, Shearer, Hall and Lebeau.

Bill Hall suddenly finds himself in a wild ride as he hits the wall coming off turn 2 going down the backstretch and veers into the water barrel at the pit entrance/exit gate and finally ends up in the turn 3 wall hard. Luckily Hall is fine, a little shaken, but not hurt. The car on the other hand had severe damage and the race was red flagged to clean up the newly formed lake at the bottom of the pit entrance.

Hight holds the point on the restart and takes the checkered followed by Danny Shearer, David Lebeau, Bruce Gayton, and Kory Kaiser. In tech, Hight wad dq'd and the win was given to Danny Shearer for his second win of the year followed by David Lebeau, Bruce Gayton, Kory Kaiser, and Bill Hall.

Big Steve Pegram had the pole for the Hurricane feature and quickly jumped to the lead on the green followed by Greg Bruce, Bobby Crites, Clyde Hudson, and #70.

Bruce takes over first as Big Steve falls to second. Crites passes Big Steve for second as Big Steve is third followed by Clyde Hudson and #70. With no cautions, this was a race for position. Greg Bruce holds the point and takes the checkered followed by #70, Bobby Crites, Clyde Hudson, and Big Steve Pegram.

Watch this new 4 cylinder class as it is growing quickly!!!!

Eric Hodge had the pole for the Strictly Stock feature and quickly jumped to the lead over Roger Benton, Bobby Crites, Jr., Richie Laszlo and David Murphy. Benton moved to first followed by Crites with Hodge settling in third followed by Murphy and Laszlo.

Murphy and Laszlo touch slightly on the frontstretch sending Laszlo into a spin but Laszlo is able to correct and goes right back to racing without bringing out the yellow. Benton holds the lead and takes the checkered followed by Crites, Hodge, Laszlo, and Springer.

In tech, the first, second and third place cars of Benton, Crites, and Hodge are dq'd with the win going to Richie Laszlo followed by Donald Springer, David Murphy, and Chester Satorus.

Terry Westcott had the pole for the Mini Stock feature but with no cautions in this race at all, it was Tim "Missileman" McPhail who took over the point and never looked back. Following McPhail was Michael Seay, Westcott, R.J. Arnone and Sean Bass.

This was a battle to the end and it was McPhail who took the checkered followed by Michael Seay, Terry Westcott, R.J. Arnone (newly married last week) and Charlie Brown.

Next Friday night the Bandolero Bandits and Young Guns will have double features with all divisions racing - Super Lates, Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock, Strictly Stock and Hurricane PLUS Mod Lites and Pro Challenge cars.
