| Joey Aguilar Tops T.B.A.R.A. Sprints on July 4th | By Claude Lewis
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (July 4) - Charlotte County Speedway celebrated the 4th of July with an appearance by the Tampa Bay Area Racing Association Winged Sprints, twin 25-lappers for the Outlaw Modifieds and three 50-lappers for Open Wheel Modifieds, Road Warriors and Thunder Trucks.
The Tampa Bay Area Racing Associations Winged Sprints ran a 35-lap feature on the 3/8-mile paved oval.
Joey Aguilar used lapped traffic to his advantage, as he finally got around the 66 car of Ray Bragg, who had led most of the race. Shane Butler took third.
Fourth was Dude Teate, fifth Wayne Reutimann Sr., sixth Scott Adema, seventh Doug Heveron, eighth Wayne Reutimann Jr., ninth Mark Gimmler and tenth Gary Gimmler.
The Winged Sprints are due back at Charlotte County Speedway for a special race July 19.
The Outlaw Modified series 4-cylinder open wheel cars held its annual Dan Curl Memorial Twin 25s. Twenty one cars showed up to race.
Ted Hoversen of Key West won the first 25-lapper and took second in the second 25-lapper to win the overall trophy. Hoversen, who drives the 5 car, is the two-time defending Outlaw Modified points champion.
Arcadias Raymond Jones, who is this years points leader so far, ran a strong second in the first 25-lapper, but a fly wheel problem kept him out of the 41 car in the second race. He did pick up some points behind the wheel of Christy Boyetts 94 car, which was uncharacteristically slow Friday night.
Doug Hopper of St. Petersburg ran a strong third in the first race but saw his chance for the Curl trophy ruined by a wreck in the second race.
In the Open Wheel Modified 50, Jefferson passed Punta Gordas Phil Morrison on lap 29 and went on to take the checkered flag. Morrison finished second in the 63 car, while John Anderson was third in the 1x car. Cape Coral hotshoe Steve Duerr was fourth, Steve Gainey of Bradenton fifth and points czar Bart Corlieto sixth.
The Road Warrior 50-lapper saw three cars in contention for its entirety. Chris Huntoon led a train including Chris Oncken and Brandon Anderson for the first 18 laps. Oncken finally got around Huntoon. From there, the train finished with points leader Oncken first, Huntoon second and Anderson third.
The Thunder Trucks 50 lapper went to points leader John Garrett, who won by a comfortable margin over runnerup[ Mike Bialecki. Cheryl Weaver was a distant third to Bialecki.
This coming Saturday is Mid-Season Championship week at Charlotte County Speedway. All the leaders at the seasons halfway point will receive 4-foot high trophies. Regular classes include Super Stock, Road Warrior and Thunder Trucks. Also racing will be Late Models, Sportsman and Open Wheel Modified. racing will begin at 7 p.m.
