Powell Memorial II Takes on Citrus County Speedway Saturday

by Larry MacMillan

The best of Florida’s Super Late Model Pilots will meet at Citrus County Speedway for the second leg of the 2003 Powell Memorial 150 Saturday night.

The pot is right for the winner to take home $5,000 plus bonus money up for grabs for fast qualifier, etc. If the weather cooperates, these hot shoes will have a busy weekend with the first leg of the Memorial race being run at Ocala Speedway on Friday night.

Survivors will make the trip to Citrus for the finale. Qualifying time trials will kick off the night and set the top 24 starting spots for the 150 lap main event.

Names to look for are Dick and Wayne Anderson, Mike Fritts, family member James Powell III, Justin Drawdy, David Rogers, Ricky Carlton, Barry Willoughby, Travis Kittleson, Lee Collins, Joe Fitos just to mention a few.

The man who has won several big money races at Citrus, Mike Bresnahan, who has a way of taking the big money at Citrus despite still looking for his first win in regular action will tuned to try it again.

Other regulars that will probably be involved are Scott Grossenbacher, Danny Johnson, Jonny Kay, Herb Neumann Jr., Rex Struble, Perry Lovelady, Mac Johnson, Tom Haselmayer and young Brock Oglesby.

Added to the program will be the other five regular divisions continuing their battle for points supremacy in 25 lap features. Mike Veltman continues his march towards his fifth consecutive Sportsman Championship. Bill Oesterreicher, John Gann, Mike Bell and Johnny Sanders are in a 200-point spread behind the leader.

Danny Cretty and Ernie Reed are locked in a virtual tie for the Street Stock lead with 2200 points apiece. Cretty is sporting two feature wins to Reed’s one. Reed has found the winner’s circle in heat action four times to Danny’s two. Joe Viverito is 65 points behind the leaders and is being chased by Mickey Burns, Daniel Webster and hard charging defending champion, Travis Nichols making noise back in sixth place after taking a heat and feature win last week.

Chris Thornton continues to hold the top spot in Mini Stock action with a 64-point lead over Chris Hooker and Phillip Joyner who are tied for second with 1850 points. Dustin DesChamps holds out in fourth with a slim two-point lead over Rob Wheatley who has had some health problems limiting his racing action over the past month. Wheatley was unable to protect his spot in three out of the last four races. George Neumann is beginning to make some noise with a couple of recent wins and is coming on strong from his seventh position.

Two-time Hobby Stock Champion Richie Smith is not having the easy ride that he experienced the past two years. Second year driver Curtis Neumann is following in his father’s, his Grandfather’s and Uncle’s footsteps and putting the pressure on the front runner trailing by only twelve points. Dean Lawyer holds on to an eighteen-point lead in the race for third with Sport Wilson who logged his fifth win of the season last week. Former champion Roy Perkins is tied with Tim Whitehead in the race for fifth.

Pat Quick continues to dominate the Thunder Stock division after scoring her third consecutive win last week and logging her sixth of the season. A three-hour complete tear down after her win last week proved that she is legal and fast. She holds a 175-point lead over her nearest contender Lee Keller who has eleven top five finishes but is still looking for Victory Lane. Louie Cioe, Larry Triana and John Donahue round out the top five.

Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of Inverness on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds, next to the Inverness airport. Grandstand gates open at 3, time trials start at 5 and the first feature race will take the green flag at 6 P.M.
