Meet Florida's Dirt Tracks Newest Series - the Southern Outlaw Dirt Modified Association

by Jane Smith

Okay, you got a dirt modified but it does not fit the rules at any track. What do you do now?? Build a new car, put it in mothballs, what?? A solution may be at hand shortly.

Chuck Adkins and Ken "The Wildchild" Smith are trying to start a new series for these misplaced modifieds. Both Adkins, who has raced in the local area for 30 years, and Smith, who has raced for 15 years, own Left Turn Limited, a chassis fabrication shop in Mount Dora, Florida.

Both Smith and Adkins said, "we love to race and want to put together a class that will be fun to watch." Thus started the dream of the Southern Dirt Outlaw Modified Association headed by both Smith and Atkins.

A number of dirt tracks have shown interest in this series if Smith and Adkins get a good response from the drivers. Said Smith, "we are trying to put together something that all the guys that have modifieds that do not fit the rules at any track can bring them out. We are going to run the big tires on the cars and a large wing will be mandatory to give them their own look."

Adkins added, "the rules are very loose so all can run. We want to create a class that is very fast and very exciting to watch. We want them to be BAD and MEAN like any self-respecting OUTLAW should be!!!"

Smith and Adkins are trying to have the first car ready by the end of the week. If you are interested in running in the Southern Outlaw Dirt Modified Series you can reach Ken Smith at 352-383-4766. Packets to Volusia Speedway Park, JAX Raceway, Putnam County, East Bay, Thundercross and Lake City should be ready to be mailed out next week.
