Yoakam takes Florida Mini Stock Challenge Win at Orlando SpeedWorld

by Jane Smith

Bithlo, Fla (May 23, 2003) After drenching rains the night before, the track was ready for the Florida Mini Stock Challenge and the drivers were ready for the challenge. Twenty eight Mini Stocks qualified with Robbie Yoakam of Hernando, FL setting fast time of 15.218. But it was Jimmy Warram of Punta Gorda who set on the pole when the green was thrown.

Robbie Storer of Zephyrhills quickly took the point on the green followed by Darren Jackson, Lee Davis, Chris Hooker, and Chad Ashley. Hooker moved into fourth, with Ashely leaving Davis and Charlie Brown doing some great side-by-side action.
Eventually Brown took fifth with Davis in sixth.

The first caution of the 50 lap event was thrown when Charlie Brown spun at the bottom of turns 3 and 4. Brown had gotten very squirelly and began to spin when Davis slightly tapped his rear-end. Davis did not cause the caution nor the spin and retained his fifth place spot.

On ther estart, Storer leads with Hooker, Ashley, Jackson and Robbie Yoakam in fifth. Yoakam begins to put the medal to the pedal and passes Jackson and takes over fourth. Yoakam continues his march to the front and Storer suddenly finds his mirror full of Robbie Yoakam.

Sean Bass and Charlie Brown spin at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 and brings out the yellow. The field is realigned with Storer, Yoakam, Hooker, Ashley, and Davis in the top five. Yoakam sees the timing is right and passes Storer for the lead and the yellow comes out again for Mark Moniz and Brain Dorer who have wrecked in turns 1 and 2. Moniz is smoking bad and has to be towed in. Dorer has a slightly smashed frontend but is able to have it checked and continue racing.

Yoakam holds the lead on the restart but it was a short green as David Seeright spins on the start coming off turn 4. Bass does a good job and missing the spinning Seeright and the race is restarted.

Yoakam holds the lead and takes the checkered followed by Robbie Storer, Chris Hooker, Chad Ashley, and Lee Davis.

Derrick Wood took yet another Bandolero Bandit win. Wood, who had the pole position for the feature race, quickly jumped to the lead and lead from green to checkered. The first caution came out when Eric Sarvesen spun in turn 2 and Matthew Jarrett spun on the front stretch.

The field was realigned with Wood at the point. On the restart, there is a mass little get together in turn 1 and the yellow comes out again but all drivers were fine and able to continue. Wood holds the point on the restart and takes the checkered followed by Josh Williams, Chad Atkins, Matthew Jarrett, and Spencer Taylor.

Josh Williams took the heat win.

Kevin Henry took the win for the Bandolero Young Guns after leading from green to checkered. The only yellow thrown was for Blake Dirks who spun in turn 4. Following Henry to the checkered was Brandon Thompson, Jessica Murphy, and Blake Dirks.

Kevin Henry took the heat win.

Bill Burkeck had the pole for the Mod Lites feature but it was John Godwin who took the lead on the green and never looked back. Goodwin lead all 20 laps in the feature and took the checkered without any cautions being called. Following Goodwin to the checkered was Bill Burbeck, Mike Belusar, Phil Krouthoff, and George Landis. Great job guys!!!!

Bill Burbeck took the heat win.

Brad Sanders set on the pole for the 20 lap Pro Challenge Cup feature and quickly jumped to the lead on the green. With no cautions, this was a side-by-side action race with Mike Lago working his way up and taking over the lead and taking the checkered followed by Brad Sanders, Rod Sanders, Tim Hart, and Howard Brennen.

Brad Sanders took the heat win.

Danny Shearer set on the pole for the Sportsman feature race but it was Michael Albert who jumped to the lead and took his first checkered in 2003. On lap 2, Joe Kubisch spun in turn 2 bringing out the only caution of the race.

Albert held the point on the restart and took the checkered followed by Richard Hight, Danny Shearer, Glenn Castro and Joe Kubisch.

Michael Albert took the heat win.

If you thought your eyes had gone bad and you were seeing double for the Super Late Model race, you were fine. B.J. McLeod had two cars on the track, one he drove and one his friend Rusty Ebersole drove.

David Hart set on the pole for the Super Late Model feature but it was Rusty Ebersole who quickly took the lead in the #178 followed by B.J. McLeod, David Hart, Jim Tasker, and Rick Bates. Bobby Lyons brought out the caution when he spun in turn 4.

On the restart, it was the #78 and #178 of Ebersole and McLeod that was running side-by-side without ever touching. Ebersole did his best to hold back McLeod but McLeod got a run on the outside and was able to pass his other car driven by Ebersole. McLeod took the checkered followed by Rusty Ebersole, David Hart, Jim Tasker, and Rick Bates.

Rusty Ebersole took the heat win.

Mike Soukup had the pole for the Super Stock feature but it was Ron Whaley who quickly took the lead on the green followed by Soukup, Wally Samrow, Bob Beiler, and Ron Edwards. Soukup slides backwards to fourth with Semrow moving into second and Beiler third. Cory Freed has moved into fifth from his rear starting postiion and starts picking up positions one by one until he gets to second behind Whaley. Whaley tries to hold off the hard charging Freed but finds that it is impossible. Freed takes the point and the checkered followed by Ron Whaley, Wally Semrow, Bob Beiler, and Mike Soukup.

Wally Semrow took the heat win.

Kerry Payne had the pole for the Strictly Stock feature but it was Eric Hodge who took the lead on the green. But his lead was not for long as Bobby Woodley was able to pass Hodge and taking over the number one spot.

The caution came out when Raybo Rowland and Robert Benton spun in turns 1 and 2 with Richie Laszlo spinning to avoid contact with Rowland and Benton. The cars were realigned with Woodley on the point.

With no more cautions, Woodley stood his ground and took his first checkered in the Strictly Stock class followed by Kerry Payne, Robert Benton, Bobby Crites, and Robert Ward.

Bobby Woodley took the heat win.

Next Friday night, May 30, at Orlando SpeedWorld it is DOUBLE POINTS night for all FASCAR divisions - Super Lates, Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock and Mini Stock. The Strictly Stock division will have a special 25 lap feature. Come join in the fun for a night of racing at Orlando SpeedWorld.

The Kids bike race saw one girl and one boy take home the brand new bikes in the 4 and 5 year olds race. The dune buggy driver Scott saw his son take his first trophy for winning the older bike race with Derrick Wood in second and Alex Fortune in third. All the kids had a great time with plenty of smiles that will last a very long time. The kids wanted more so hopefully we will have bike races more often for the kids of Orlando SpeedWorld.
