Goodyear Challenge Series opens Saturday

by John Barker

SAMSULA, Fla. (March 20, 2003) - The FASCAR Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series opens Saturday night at New Smyrna (FL) Speedway with a Carquest Road to Charlotte Late Model 100 and 2002 FASCAR Goodyear champion Jerry Symons of New Smyrna, FL leads the way.

Twenty-five Late Model cars are expected for Carquest racing and FASCAR qualifying for Goodyear Challenge Series Late Models is slated for 6 p.m. Racing for all classes starts at 7:30 p.m.

Ticket prices are $15 for grandstand seating and $25 for pit admittance.

Symons driving the Gene Kelly Roofing Chevrolet edged Wayne Morris of Mulberry, FL in 2002 for the FASCAR championship by a mere two points (1010) after he recovered from a late race tangle.

"It was great to win this championship here at New Smyrna Speedway," said Symons. "I have to thank my whole crew for this title and we had a great season. We also thank Dennis Boyd (engine builder), because he's put a good motor under us all last year."
