Wayne Jefferson Takes Twin 50 Open Wheel Wins At DeSoto

By Rick Anges

It was once again the Rocket Man Wayne Jefferson taking the checkers winning both 50 lap Open Wheel features and taking home the $2,000 winners share of the purse.

Jefferson dominated last weeks race making it three wins in a row on the High Banks.

Race one looked like it might go to local favorite and low qualifier D.J.Hoelze but Hoelzes mount had mechanical problems and was forced to retire for the night.

Jefferson took the lead and was able to hold off Timmy Moore to take the win, John Anderson came across the stripe third, in fourth it was Jeffersons car owner Chet Senogossoff, and fifth went to the Mopar of John Shields.

In Race Two the field was inverted from the finishing order of the previous race. Andy Dyndal took the point and led several laps.

Timmy Moore eventually took the lead and he and Jefferson put on a show as Jefferson was doing all he could to get by the Green Machine of Moore.

As the laps wound down it was a race off attrition. Wrecks and mechanical woes dwindled the field down but Jefferson and Moore never slowed down and raced each other hard over the closing laps.

The leaders crossed the stripe with 9 laps to go when things got ugly. Steve Perez blew a motor going into turn 3 laying down oil and sending cars sliding into each other. Unfortunately for the leader Moore he was also caught up in the melee and slammed hard into the stalled Perez ending his bid for the win.

Jefferson went on to take his second victory of the night, Patrick McGinnis survived to finish second, third went to Andy Dyndal who was also caught up in the late race wreck. I owe this all to my crew for getting me back out here, Dyndal said. Chet Senogossoff was fourth and Timmy Moore had to settle for fifth.

Mod-Minis

Some of the top names in Mod-Mini racing from around the state were on hand for the 50 lap shoot-out. The roll of the die inverted the field 6 rows, which put most of the faster cars mid pack.

Joey Catarelli jumped out to the early leading the field for several laps but Corbin Gibbs made his way through the field and eventually took the lead and started to pull away.

There was a lot of good racing going on all through the pack but one car in particular was really doing some slicing and dicing and that was the 44 machine of Clay Joseph. Joseph was able to put his car anywhere on the track using both the high and low grooves.

Joseph eventually caught up to the hard charging Gibbs and after running door handle to door handle for a few laps took the lead and started to put distance between him and the rest of the pack.

Steve Gill who also started mid pack was making his way to the front was caught up in a tangle coming out of turn 2 and spun, Gill was sent to the rear on the re-start. But Gill was determined and made his way back through the field.

Joseph had built a good lead and looked like he might cruise to the victory but a late race caution bunched the field and put Gill right on his back bumper. The last few laps had the fans on their feet as the crowd was evenly divided in rooting on the their favorite driver. Both drivers were determined to be the first across the stripe.

Gill and Joseph ran each other hard but clean as the two did battle over the final laps, but when the smoke cleared it was Clay Joseph holding off the charge of Gill and taking the win, Gill took second, third was Corbin Gibbs, fourth Joe Irwin and rounding out the top five was Mary Green.

Mini-Stocks

Joe Gagen was the man to beat in the mini-stock feature taking the checker flag. John Wilson was once again on the front stretch taking the second spot and giving another 25% to the Kids by the Sea. "I'm having a blast the car is really working good, its all about having fun and helping people" said Wilson. Todd Freed Jr. who is also having a great early season took third, fourth went to the Ford of Mike Gayle, and fifth was Syndee Brown.

Pure Stocks

Alex Abbott held off the rest of the thundering herd Pure Stocks to take the win in the rough and tumble feature event, second went to Dale Shelton, third was Jody Collins, fourth went to Jimmie Best and in fifth it was Rob Taylor.

DeSoto-Trucks

Shane Russ took the trophy in the DeSoto-Truck event, B.J.Gill wearing brother Bobbys fire suit was second, third was early race leader Shawn Ively, fourth was Rick Sirmans and rounding out the top five was James Glover.

Street Stocks

Jimmie Best took the win in another great street stock race. Second went Tommy Huffstutler, Jonathan Heidenthal was third, fourth went to Duane Best and fifth was Lucky Brown.

Coming up next week the All American Challenge Series Super Late Models return to the Souths Fastest Short Track. B.J. McLeod comes into race #2 the points leader.
